If it had been @SpiritHorse I might have reconsidered. But since it's not:CokeGreaterThanPepsi said:
I agree that all of that is important. But I have heard from the horses mouth (Not @SpiritHorse) that recruiting is over 50% of the job now. It is, it just is, it is what it is, therefore it is.dnc said:
I know you guys do, and I love you, but we'll agree to disagree on that.CokeGreaterThanPepsi said:
Disagree with the bolded, otherwise, good.dnc said:
If recruiting was more than half of CFB a Chris Strausser OL never sniffs the playoffs. Recruiting is maybe 40% at most.Edwin_Bambino said:
At least half of college football is recruiting if not more so yeah I value recruiting. He has also been the best at developing talent on the entire coaching staff.dnc said:
Dude's never called plays, let's make him coach in waiting cause recruits!Edwin_Bambino said:Jimmy Lake flirting with leaving last year is really coming back to fuck our recruiting. You know all the other coaches in the conference are whispering in the ear of all his recruits that he won't be sticking around. I'd love to see UW give him the title of Associate HC or something with a agreement that whenever Pete leaves or retires he is next up however who knows when that will be.
I'm not going to pretend to know if Jimmy Lake can call plays well however he has been in Pete's system for awhile and if my proposal came to pass would most likely be learning under Pete for a number of more years before taking the reigns. It's not something I'm overly concerned with. If thinking Pete can develop his coaches as well as he can his players is being a doog than so be it. I don't think it will happen I was just throwing it out there as an interesting scenario.
Lake is phenomenal at developing DBs, no question about that. I love the dude. But no way I'm giving the future to a guy who's never been a coordinator, let alone at a high level. Every head coach I know of who never coordinated before getting the HC slot bombed.
Hard pass.
Recruiting is important. We aren't winning an NC without high level recruiting. On that we agree.
But there's so much more that goes into a great program. Setting a winning culture/work ethic. Developing players skills. Developing players bodies. X's and O's. Choosing the right players to play. Managing personalities.
I'm honestly not sure recruiting is more than 33% of it.
To be the best you need to be good at all of those and great at most of them.
Recruiting matters. It's important. But so are a lot of other things.
It's a clear cut case of abundance that everything matters, that is why we are good, because everything matters and Pete is so good with culture, development, strength/nutrition, work ethic and all that. -
Recruiting is far more than 50% of the story if you are talking about being decent to pretty good. Meaning strong recruiting can turn a below average program into an above average one without the coaching being particularly good.
But when you are talking about going from pretty good or good to excellent/elite, all the other stuff (fundamentals, culture, scheme, S&C, etc.) is more important.
Put another way, strong recruiting is necessary but not sufficient to have a top tier program.
I watched Mack Brown take over the Texas program and turn it from a terrible joke under Mackovic to a pretty strong program on the basis of recruiting alone. But Brown still got routinely embarrassed by better coaches (Stoops, Snyder) until Vince Young came along. What Vince could do on the field was critical, but he also was a team leader that instilled a culture that Brown couldn't or wouldn't. -

Had an in-home visit with Brian Kelly today. He's visiting ND next weekend again (unofficially this time) for 3 days. Going to be a tough battle with ND.

How has Lake not delivered this kid yet?

Sounds like Lake may have gotten caught with his pants down on this one. Obviously Lake has been a great recruiter the last couple years but this year has been a real struggle for him thus far. No excuse for losing Kyler to ND.HuskyClaws said:Had an in-home visit with Brian Kelly today. He's visiting ND next weekend again (unofficially this time) for 3 days. It’s what happens when you flirt with another job for 3-4 days and everyone in the industry knew it. He was gonna have a tough time recruiting this year because of that, hopefully he can overcome it with Gordon.
-
He probably wants to leave Washington. I'm ok with that.
-
there is something seriously wrong with our recruiting. this kid should have been committed months ago. Tremblay should have committed months ago. Taimani should have committed months ago.
Yes we lost tui last year. it fucking happens. that doesn't mean we employ a strategy of letting kids dick around for 5 months until they eventually get captivated by some shiny object and we end up with a bunch of JAG losers like Wilson and that other POS we just flipped from utah
-
It seems Petersen wanted to put everyone on the back burner until the season was over. Not sure that was such a great strategy.dhdawg said:there is something seriously wrong with our recruiting. this kid should have been committed months ago. Tremblay should have committed months ago. Now he is suddenly full throttle. -
Pete and co seem to always hit this imaginary recruiting wall at the end of every summer. They land a bunch of their top targets early on in the year and we doog out, but then the football season starts and almost everything is downhill from there.
In the 3 full recruiting cycles Pete's had here (2015-17), I can think of like 6 total players who were top targets and actually committed during or after the season: Potato, Joyner, Murphy, Levi, Molden, Bain. And for those 6 guys there's an almost countless number of whiffs.
If we miss out on most of our late targets and have to settle for plan C's yet again, then Pete needs to rethink how he's approaching recruiting top talent. -
This is spot on.NEsnake12 said:Pete and co seem to always hit this imaginary recruiting wall at the end of every summer. They land a bunch of their top targets early on in the year and we doog out, but then the football season starts and almost everything is downhill from there.

It seems like Petersen and his staff use a recruiting approach that appeals to logic and common sense. Hence why many recruits' parents seem to love it. But when you are dealing with teenagers and/or families that aren't led by clear thinking people, this doesn't always work.
The bottom line is that the staff doesn't necessarily need to totally change approach, but they do need 1-2 more recruiters who are young(er) and charismatic. It wouldn't hurt, at all, if at least one of those guys was black. And it would be nice if one of our Polynesian coaches could actually relate to Poly players. -
Gordon is weird. Arguably our best recruiter can’t land a position we pump into the NFL more than almost any other team is confusing. Togiai is also kind of a blunder but not really (Malloe) UW should be an easy sell with the location, recent success of not only the program, but defensive linemen like Vea, Gaines, Shelton etc.

One of FSU's best commits, CB Houston Griffith, bailed on them tonight (as well as others) because of Jimbo and the A&M job situation. He instantly got 15+ crystal balls to Notre Dame. Definitely taking Kyler's spot as their #1 CB recruit so that could help UW

Is he any relation to KeiVarrae Russell? Just curious.

Lake definitely visited Kyler Gordon today -
literally 30 seconds before I posted it FML
-
Tom Loy is still pushing the "UW is heavily trying to sway him with negative recruiting, and it might not be sitting very well in Kyler Gordon's Camp". He said that he thinks Gordon and his family still want to come out to Visit ND, but that UW could swoop in again and change his mind.
