Republicans vs. Democrats: The Presidents

Jefferson and Adams were the best, Lincoln great, Eisenhower good, Teddy real good. LBJ and Nixon sucked. Carter always too high on any list.
Why does everyone have a love affair with FDR and JFK? -
In a word: _Leadership. They held office during difficult times, showed up, and helped. FDR is an absolute no-brainer. My God. What do you want?LebamDawg said:Jefferson and Adams were the best, Lincoln great, Eisenhower good, Teddy real good. LBJ and Nixon sucked. Carter always too high on any list.

When I was a ute in the 60's FDR was still widely known as a socialist fuck up by real rock ribbed conservatives in Olympia and Aberdeen
People rippin Reagan in this thread despite the economic and cultural miracle of the 80's. FDR needed 12 years and a world war to fix the economy
Over rated clap clap clap clap clap -
Plus, he was getting strange in a wheel chair. And Kennedy had more of it than all of us put together. Much respeck.creepycoug said:

Pressing. And missing the point. It's just another perspective. I promise, it won't hurt us.dnc said:

Another theory, which I'm somewhat persuaded by, is that their time was up sooner or later for organic reasons, not for Reagan reasons.salemcoog said:

For that alone he gets the at large bid.
The theory, which buys Marxism an "out", is this: they rushed into communism w/o going through a full stage of capitalism, which as we all know does wonders to eliminate scarcity. They hopped over capitalism from a feudal system and tried to make it work. The Communist Manifesto supports doing this. The German Ideaology and Das Kapital, do not.
The doctrine of historical materialism and its prediction of a socialist utopia depends a great deal, or entirely, on the concept of technological advancement. You saw this expressed through Soviet Russia's near obsession with doing great public works. The idea is that, once you get to some magical place where technology can eliminate scarcity, people won't have to compete for their existence, and can instead go off and self-actualize, because I guess we call all just wander into these make-believe warehouses and get whatever we need whenever we want to. Whatever. Who's really to say what the world will look like in 1,000 years anyway.
But the basic notion here would be that they tried central planning before they could pull it off. That, and they were surrounded by hostile interests who didn't trade with them and who cut them off economically, or tried to. In the end, the theory goes, Russia's failure was less a failure of communism as a theory, and more a failure of timing. Either way, these people would say Reagan was just at the right place at the right time and drafted behind history.
Creep out.
Washington was just in the right place at the right time.
FDR was just in the right place at the right time.
Timing is a massive fucking part of legacy. You still have to capitalize on it though. -
The fuck? You sound like some crotchety, ivory tower, lefty academic type with this nonsense. Reagan got 2 of the top 4 wins by a President of the past 50 years- i.e., ending stagflation and winning the Cold War (the other 2 are LBJs Civil Rights legislation and Nixon opening China and splitting them off from the Soviets). Yeah, the fundies sucked - and you know I hate them as much as any man here - but wins are wins and the history on this is clear.Dennis_DeYoung said:

Reagan did a lot of FS shit and he was basically a total disaster, but how can anyone here forgive him for legitimizing and bringing to the center of American politics the fucking evangelicals?
FFS. -
Reagan did a lot of great things, including being an inspirational leader. The country needed him at that time, someone strong to provide stability. And for that he succeeded.YellowSnow said:

I do chuckle tho when people romanticize his presidency and forget that the national debt exploded under him, mortgage interest rates were well into the double digits, the way the war on drugs was carried out was lame, and the divide between wealthy and poor exploded under him. -
They were double digits when he was elected but still
And they went down
They didn't hit single until 1991
The Reagan recovery puts Obama to shame

You actually didn't address one of my comments. But thanks for showing your head is firmly planted up Reagan's ass.RaceBannon said:They were double digits when he was elected but still
