The scene where Laura dern crashes into the ship was pretty good

Except for the fact she should have done that exact same thing right away instead of losing half of their escape pods.
This was my problem with the movie. I thought it was good overall, and had a lot of things going for it, but man was there a lot of stupid shit. The casino scene was completely unnecessary and added 20 mins. Leia's bullshit flying thing was also stupid- either kill her off or have it be more reasonable, like shielding herself with the force as opposed to flying around like a bullshit magical Star Wars version of Star Lord. Luke's character arc was fine by me, but why the fuck did he milk some magical fatass with 4 tits? What was going on with the Force skype shit? Why was Finn turned from a great character into a sideshow? Why did Poe decide to become a jackass out of nowhere? Why didn't Laura Dern's character explain the plan as opposed to staying mum when Poe was mouthing off?

Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but a quality control assistant would have been cause for much rejoicing.

I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. It was about what i expected. Bad acting, cool effects, a couple things that make no sense, but a plot that generally holds your interest. I still like Poe and Finn, and I think Rey's pretty cool for a forced heroine.

But most of those impressions are holdovers from VII, nothing happened in VIII that made any of them particularly more interesting or likeable.

I did like a few things about the film:

Rey's not a Skywalker, or anybody important at all. I thought for sure she was going to be Luke's kid or at least related to them somehow.
Ren turning evil after killing Snoke/wiping out the red storm stooper doods.
Benicio selling them out. Honestly I liked everything Benicio did.
Snoke being the one who set up the force bridging shit, and showing what a sucker Rey was.

Everything with Leia was bad, especially the floating through the air shit. Kylo's way more impressive with the mask on, taking it off for the entirety was a terrible way to move away from the Vader comps. Every sith lord in the entire series is either completely badass looking or old and decrepit. Then we get emo Ren.

It was more bad than good but I'm sure I'll watch it again (though not in theaters) and see the next one, too.

I agree. If I could wear that mask around all day to intimidate people I'd never take it off.

Unless your mask just makes you look like Nazi Squidward

Some little ladies sure do get they're panties in a wad because somebody makes a Star Wars movie that doesn't conform to they're fanboi expectations

Apt reaction to pretty much the entire series, much less so for the sequels.

I expected it to be bad.

It was bad and the plot had more holes than Pellum's defense.

People forget how campy, cheesy, and full of plot holes the Original Trilogy was. People forget that.

It's a fucking Star Wars movie, not Shakespeare.
ah the old indiana jones 4 defense

bashing a beloved trilogy to prop up modern dreck

haven't seen this one in a while

    long post

I think even the Phantom Menace flowed better, and at least it had the mystery aspect of what was going on with the senate. The Force Awakens even had some mystery to it, and it was easy to follow and not too campy.

This movie was a chase like the old Battlestar Galactica series plot, and it wasn't strong enough to be a whole movie. They could of even used a lot of stuff from Attack of the Clones again, and it might have worked better.

Did they test it to audiences and see what their reactions were? They should have storyboarded it to audiences or something, or looked at the other movie storyboards to make sure they had a believable premise and plot or something that wasn't rubbish.

Speaking of contrived deadlines, I hate it on flip shows when they start panicking over their open house date that they set

    Move the date asshole

Except that Indiana Jones 4 really did suck.

We enjoyed the Original Trilogy despite the fact that they were campy, cheesy, and full of plot holes. TLJ is a good film, but not the film that fanboys wanted to see. I'd hazard a guess that Johnson doesn't give a flying fuck what a test audience thinks about his film. This movie isn't about pleasing the masses by making safe formulaic choices; it's about taking them out of their comfort zone and defying their expectations of how the story should go. He even told the audience, not that many of them listened.

See that's where they go wrong.

It should be an Asian character in that role.

I haven’t seen this film and won’t, but all these type of movies are about pleasing the masses. The execs know fan boys will buy tickets and they dumb it down even further for Chinese kids.
You mean like the Pac 12 Network game???

The 77 release of Star Wars is widely credited for starting the cartoon movie trend that is with us to this day. The blockbuster.

70's movies had become like 70's traditional rock - bloated and self indulgent. With our new 5 second attention span many of them are unwatchable today even for those of us who were there and liked them.

The original was basically a tale of good versus evil. Always a crowd pleaser. If you are looking to star wars for your tasteful movie event you might want to reconsider.

I like the re boot of Star Trek. Pine is the best Kirk since Shatner. Times change got to change with them

Star Trek was always better. They fucked around and let Star Wars get the movie out first then the first Star Trek movie was a bomb. But they figured it out

Wrath of Khan is the only good Star Trek movie with the TOS cast. The other 6 sucked.

JJ Abrams directed 7, not Spielberg.
