If you want an area to hold onto for optimism, the 2021 recruiting class is going to be one of the strangest ones on record because of the lack of Spring evaluations, no summer underwear Olympics, and quite possibly not having a high school season. Projections will mean a ton this year.
Recruiting matters but going off recruiting rankings and "stars" alone is not enough. These are often inexact projections of kids from unstandardized measures of recruiting analysts (not coaches) when they're 16 of how they'll be throughout their college career. Recruiting rankings don't adjust as kids workout and devote their time to studying the game in college, and to hold onto ideas of stars after the first 2 years (that Wellington was a 4* and Dissly was a 2*) in college is asinine.
I’ve always been aware that recruiting is extremely important. The problem I’ve always had is that in order to get into the top 5-10 in recruiting, other teams need to drop. I could rattle off 10-15 schools that recruit well every single year.
There are a handful of schools that really are just missing 2-5 bonafied studs. UW is one of those schools. You replace Browning with one of the top QB’s on the country and maybe a true early round NFL OL and we would have really competed for a natty during those seasons, especially 2016.
I also don’t fully buy into the blue chips theory. Every single 4 star recruit is considered a blue chip. There is a big different in getting the #10-15 WR and getting the 50th ranked 4 star WR like Tinae.
For the record, I think it's clear that this year's staff turnover has lost us substantial recruiting ability, and I'm very skeptical we gained a commensurate amount talent development skills in return. I am on board that we need to upgrade Bob and Bonerpopper's positions with top-tier recruiters (potentially Harris too). I just didn't buy the argument that we were failing when we were pulling in classes that put our blue chip ratio above 50% for the first time ever. Manu wouldn't have gotten a sniff in any of the last 4 classes.
While we could have improved a bit, I think we were relatively close to the peak of our recruiting ability with the '18-'20 classes. Without an amazing crop of in-state talent like this year, ending up somewhere in the 10-15 range is what should be expected on an annual basis. Never below 20 and occasionally top 10 when the stars align.
