But what's interesting to this list to me is the number of QBs that won with little experience going into the season. Each of the last 2 years that was the case. When McCarron won in 2011 he took over for McElroy. Newton's title came in his first year as a starter. Flynn was a backup to Randle and Russell before starting as a senior.
What I think you can conclude from the list is that the extra maturity that comes with being in your 3rd to 5th year within the program is a helpful trait in winning a national championship, the experience that comes with it of having had 25+ starts going into the season isn't necessarily a predictor of success. If anything, what this list proves is that QBs in college football can be as dependent upon the system and players around them as their own special and unique talents.
Now, before people go twisting, Cyler Miles still sucks as a QB and Jonathan Smith has a "prove it" to me bullseye on himself going forward.
Kessler is really good at throwing the WR screen and slants when his WRs beat DBs by 5 yards.
He's losing most of his talented WRs ...
We know WR screens don't work great against good teams.
Kessler's stats in SC losses last year:
@ BC: 31 of 41 for 317 and 4 TDs (7.7 YPA)
vs ASU: 28 of 45 for 273 and 0 TDs (6.1 YPA)
@ Utah: 24 of 32 for 264 and 1 TD (8.3 YPA)
@ UCLA: 22 of 34 for 214 and 1 TD (6.3 YPA)
Two things stand out here. First, 3 road losses ... standard Seven. Second, the yards per attempt aren't really that great. He averaged 8.5 yards per attempt last year. In each of their losses, he was up to 2.4 yards per attempt less per game.
One of the big criticisms of Seven is that his teams put up huge numbers against overmatched teams ... the numbers above suggest that that is the case.

Typically, an overwhelming majority of national titles are won by greats coaches with exceptions in the cases of guys like Larry Coker and Gene Chidzik.
Great coaches build programs on some type of foundation that includes a process where they try to build up team depth through red-shirting and effective roster management.
That process by itself tends to produce teams that are predominantly built around upperclassmen including at the QB position but in now way does that mean an upperclassmen QB by itself is an indicator a team will win a conference or national championship.
And if you wanted to dig a little deeper (like your Dawgman buddy Kim would suggest <--------faggoty wink), you'd also understand that the majority of national champions are from the days when freshmen were automatically red-shirted but that's too much thinking for a scholar like PLSSFS.
QB's better than Kessler..........................just go to Ohio St(they have 3 that are) Braxton Miller for sure, Barrett and Cardale Jones is only one who may not be but he has won more big games than Kessler has in his career. That being said if we had Kessler this past year = 10 wins at least no doubt
