My dad hated youth sports. We played on the streets and fields where we fought for our meals

Good, children under 12 aren't ready for such a life altering decisions, its just putting a simple pause on their athletic development and once they are 12 and old enough they can make their own choice rather than just arbitrarily getting assigned the sport by their parent.
