What I think about taxes
However, being a successful person like we are now costs more thanks to a pretty steep state income tax. Still not a property owner but property taxes are in line with Seattle.
The bottom line is, if you're poor taxes don't mean shit and you usually get money back. If you are semi rich you get nailed but 65% of a lot is better than 100% of nothing.

Property tax is generally passed on to renters, except you don't get to deduct it.

But rents are not unreasonable. Prop 13 was the best thing this state ever did. Otherwise property taxes and rent would be sky high.

Totally agree. California living is very expensive. Property taxes are the least of it thanks to Prop 13. Incomes are high for professionals and the lifestyle is exceptional -- so long as you can generate the cash flow. Below a certain break-even point there is the moment where many people say Arizona here I come! CA government policies support this huge wealthy / poor divide. Property taxes are just another form of state sanctioned theft and should be abolished. As long as property taxes exist, no one truly owns the land they live on and the basement they sleep in, they are just renting it from the government. Fuck property taxes.

Most municipalities save the shit we really need for special levies. If you want 9-11 and fire and police you have to vote for additional taxes above property tax.

I think you are talking about Mello Roos districts that came shortly after prop 13. A lot of riverside county, especially sw riverside county was developed in the 1980s and 90s, by mello roos. Mello Roos district taxpayers pay for their own infrastructure and services. The property taxes are about 50% higher in Mello Roos districts but you get what you pay for.
