The Tragedy of Seattle

Swaye and I were talking a few weeks ago and he mentioned how in the 1990s, Seattle was one of the greatest places on earth. I've been thinking a lot about that comment.

And now, with homelessness being encouraged, criminal activity being made legal, police budget going to be cut by 50%, police officers being demonized, and the Seattle City Council has just passed a tax law that will impose $200 million of extra taxes on big Seattle businesses during a deep recession -- which will drive many of the business to leave the area.

Seattle is going to turn into Cleveland or Newark. And there will be no bounce back. No business person in their right mind will want to invest in the area.

And Seattleites are sitting by and letting it happen.

And this doensn't take into account how Inslee is fucking over the state as a whole.

They are killing the golden goose. Seattle in the 90s was perfect. Liberal sure, but lots of TUFF logger types, not these pussy SJW progressive weenies. The fall for Seattle has been swift and profound. From my favorite city pretty much ever, to one of the worst, all in a generation.

Moved away in 2017. Been back a couple times and it seemed like the homeless situation continues to get worse despite all the money getting thrown at it. It's almost like there's some connection between opioid abuse, homelessness, and crime but I just can't figure out what that connection might be.

Like @whatshouldicareabout, I also blame the Californians.
    Money, money, money.

Dealers get theirs, kickbacks to the politicians, save-the-downtrodden-pseudo-charities and bureaucrats gets theirs.

    Homelessness is it's own economy.

The lessons of the 60's and 70's failed policies are here to make a comeback. Urban decay will be the new gentrification.

    Detroit West.

The white flight from Seattle already happened decades ago.

Demographics aside, it's about capital, business, and nice middle class people like you. There's plenty of shitty majority white Midwest cities.

I feel really lucky that I got to visit, attend college, and live in Seattle when I did. It really was a jewel of a city tucked away in the corner of the country.

Problem is, it’s not only Seattle that’s going down the tubes, but the Eastside as well. Right now I’m in the process of packing and getting ready to LEAVE! Bellevue and it makes me sad, but this isn’t what I signed up for. I understand places and times change & evolve but this is ridiculous.

Bellevue has two decades before it sees the kinds of problems that Seattle is experiencing.

Especially the part about it becoming Cleveland in 2 years.

    Tech is going no where.

Dont get me wrong, there are some bat shit crazy policies. But it's far from the hell hole my fellow tuggers think it is.

    Exactly this.

Grew up in Eastern WA, moved to Seattle in ‘91 to go to UW, lived top of Queen Anne Hill at watched the WTO riots out of my living room window. Never imagined it could get worse.

Moved from QA to Ballard when zoning still existed that stipulated Swedish was the tallest building in the neighborhood. “Free Ballard.”

Watched the City Council destroy a great neighborhood by rezoning, increasing the tax base, etc., and then they moved Nicklesville from E Marginal Way to within 3 blocks of my Home.

Sold, moved to Woodinville, and now am headed back over the Mountains ASAP.

Fuck Seattle, and fuck the techie, dickless cunts that have taken it over, and try to act “woke.”

Best news is, the pieces of shit they vote into office just stamped their relocation passport out of town.

    Fucking sheep
First bolded section is why the second bolded section is unlikely, at least to the point where real change will be affected.

Another myth of Seattle is how international and metropolitan it is. Yes you like “real” sushi even though your favorite place is Korean owned, and you know the difference between north and South Indian food. However, you’ve fucking never traveled and you see the world through the lense of your bullshit groupthink neighborhood espresso house friends sharing TED talks and npr articles.

I have way more international friends in Dallas fucking Texas than my friends back in Seattle. It’s geographically a great hub
for international business between South America and Europe. Most my friends are in Europe or Asia 2/3 times a year for work, and we can discuss much of the world first hand.

This cultural arrogance Seattle has is so infinitely unwarranted or earned, there’s a reason the only time you come up in the news is to be laughed at.

Dude, it's all 100% fake. Seattleites are the insecure Frady-Cats from the playground who slowly tie their shoelaces or go to the bathroom when the real fighting starts. If I want the experience you describe, I go to Whistler, B.C. They've got all the international sexy stuff without the heroin addicts everywhere, like Vancouver, BC.

This. I live in the city. This dystopian take is fun for the usual Tug Hyperbole Olympics, but it’s time to dial back the hysteria ladies. And whoever said Bellevue and the East Side is going to shit ... really? How so? In my view it’s never been better. ES has grown like crazy last 5 yrs, has more services, great public schools and tax base, and is attracting more bidness than ever. The only negative is that it’s become really expensive to buy in, and that is usually a sign that people want to be there.

Yeah there are some challenges at the present moment, but relax for Christ’s sake. I was working downtown during WTO, and we? have had a homeless issues here on and off for years. The U District itself was a blight of homelessness when I was there in the late 80s / early 90s. Granted not to the level we see now, and I sure don’t remember anyone like Sawant b4. But fuck, that doesn’t mean the city will be an ash heap any time soon.

    Take a deep breath.
