If Hop Loses Out

Recruiting rankings in basketball are useless. The one and done five stars get you high rankings, but ultimately mean very little.
Shooting is absolutely crucial. It is easy enough to scheme defensively to make up for not having lock down one on one defenders.
We don’t need a team full of NBA players to be good. What we need is tough minded team players that can develop. Shooting should be a huge priority.
If we had Stevenson, Elleby, Noah Williams, and Emmett Wilson next year, we could bar really good. There is no reason we shifted or passed on those guys. -
Imagine blaming the players that they develop everywhere else besides UW.Tequilla said:
Taking your comments at face value ... that’s 3 kids in 10 years for the programdnc said:
IT, Thybulle and Nowell aren't *exceptions*, they're literally as many of them as there are one and done local kids in that time span (Wroten, Murray and Jaden).Tequilla said:

Lots of dudes can play ... no question about that
But there have been a lot of dudes coming out of Seattle that play super selfish individual ball that flames out
For all those that like to say the local kids want to put on for their school, family, and friends locally ... historically that hasn’t been true in hoops other than for fits and starts
UW has never really been the primary school of choice for the local kids ... that’s been true across multiple UW coaches
Most of the best players that this area has produced has gone elsewhere
I’m not super crazy about the general mindset that has come out locally tied to the local AAU level ... lots of kids playing individually and not tied to the team
Who is the last Seattle area kid that really did anything of consequence in college? Payton Siva?
There are plenty players from Seattle playing well elsewhere.
This team was good with Seattle players last year.
Seattle players aren't the problem unless you're talking about Hop's inability to recruit them.
Over the last 5-10 years by and large the best local players that have come to UW have been 1 and done ... the exceptions being IT, Thybulle, and Nowell
We recruit the 2nd tier local kids (like the Wazzu guys) and the complaints become that Hop isn’t recruiting well enough (and let’s be fair here the Cougs are still a below .500 P12 team) ... when those guys look good getting big minutes on a shitty team they become why didn’t we recruit them stories
It’s probably fair to say Hop needs to do better locally ... but I don’t look at this team as a sign that his ability to get talent is the issue. I see the issues being lack of consistent performance, effort levels, playing for each other ... basically a number of little things that win games
50% of the best local players of the past decade is not an exception.
Not a number to rely on in building a program -
Unless YOU have the cash on HAND to personally pay for Hop’s buyout, you don’t get to criticize.dnc said:

Do you have any idea what kind of damage you’re doing here? -
I don’t want him fired. That’s a pretty good reason why you should want him fired.Tequilla said:

But unless you fuckers that want him fired are prepared to pony up the $$$ to buy him out ... then you can LIPO -

Here I thought there would be some new take or information about Hop leaving or something, instead its Tommy trying to run Teq's ass and a "discussion" on the local talent UW doesnt recruit
Thread plays out as about the same as the basketball season did; decent start, issues but still some promise, absolute shit show collapse, Roadie trying to carry the thread like Stewart, more collapse, apathy -
I just like to help doogs find their way back home to Doogman where they can really shine.Houhusky said:

To put this in perspective, this squad would give its left nut for a Ryan Appleby right now.ThomasFremont said:

Think about that. Ryan Fucking Appleby is a value-add to the shit show that Hop has cobbled together.
I mean, I love me some gritty whiteboy guards but when Apples is what you'd plug in right this second as an upgrade, that's just wrong.

With the right team, Apples would be a weapon playing 15-20 minutes a game.PurpleThrobber said:

If I were a coach, I would be a huge premium on shooting. Having multiple guys that can get hot from outside really helps teams avoid scoring lulls. -
Like you said, if Hop actually had some recruits coming in, I wouldn’t be dead set on firing him. He doesn’t, which means we are a couple years away from even being a tournament team. Other than Battle and Tsohonis, every other freshman or sophomore that will be here next year is worthless.Houhusky said:

Hop can’t coach offense to begin with. We don’t have any guy that could be a go-to guy. I think Battle could be like CJ Wilcox and become a 15 per game guy. That’s it. I’ve written off Bey. Tsohonis is a fine player but he will never be better than a top 5-10 PG in the league. Roberts might develop into a decent third big, but having him as the best big on the team is troubling.
