My friend was a waiter at the Heathman in downtown Portland and the bane of his existence was No tippin Clyde the Glide. My daughter waitressed in Eugene part-time while a student and her beef was with native Chinese. Sexual harassment and crummy tips.
Had plenty of dinning experiences with members of my wife's family. They're all lousy tippers. I'll pick up the tab and tell them they can leave the tip and they still tip like crap. I don't know what it is but blaming slavery is pretty fucking pathetic.
Do they understand the bare minimum expectation should be 15% unless the service was bad? Do they understand that most people with decent means and a modicum of human decency tip 20-30%? Moreover, do they understand how to determine what 15-30% of the tab is? I ask because many people surprisingly do not.

I rarely go out to eat, but I'll tip the bartender, Llyft, or barber 15-25 depending on the service. I even tip hotel maids. But I can't stand the fucking options that come up that include a 58% tip. GTFO. Pay them more then. Don't pass the burden on to us.

It's easy to tell the others...I've been a driver for 5 years in San Francisco and talked to numerous other white black, Latino drivers men and women drivers and they all had the same opinion... I've also talked to servers about it and they said it too. Sorry the truth hurts.

I’m a 20% max guy. And it goes down from there if service sucks. But it never goes down past 10% though.
Here's something I've always wondered about tipping. If you order something to go do you still tip and how much?
I tip 10% because half the effort is required. I once tipped a bitch ass waitress .01 because it was obvious this black chick did not like interracial couples. Food purposely delivered cold. Place was not busy at the time. Horrible attitude towards us. I've never done it before but we stopped on the way out and I cornered the manager. Told him his waitress was having a bad day and he needed to send her "ass" home. Dude hands me his card and a free dinner offer. Asked where we were seated, I said "black chick's section." Off he went.
What made it obvious she didn’t like mixed couples. I have hade many shitty attitudes and cold food served.
One thing I noticed is black people (and mixed couples apparently) site examples of being treated poorly because of their race and then give examples of shit that happens to everyone. It’s never the person was having a shitty or there was a mix up or misunderstanding. It always seems to be they are out for me because of my race.

Does everyone have black guys come up to them when they're out in the club telling them that there is no way they're satisfying that black woman they're with? The number of times someone ever said anything to me and my wife was when we were dating many years ago and it was only a few times and it was always black males doing the talking. I didn't give a fuck. But I did find it interesting that my wife and I have travelled all over the West in some very small rural towns where she was the only black person within miles and I never heard a negative word from anyone, in fact I found that many times that people were overly solicitous as a way of wanting us to feel more comfortable.
Again, this was all many years ago, mixed race couples are way more common now. From what I see on TV, all couples are mixed race, or gay.
I dated two black women in my 20's. There were hardly any black people in Seattle so I never ran into what you did but the mothers were a different story. Both relationships came to an end by me being met at their door by their mothers. Both said their daughters were going to marry in their race, and that was the end of me. When I was single, the first sign of difficulty in a relationship and I was gone so in both cases it didn't bother me in the least.

1. It's literally people voluntarily giving workers extra money. Imagine thinking this is a bad thing.
2. It should only occur when paying for a luxury service, such as dining at a full service restaurant or having food delivered to your house.
3. In some states it's legal to pay servers half or significantly less than minimum wage, and I agree that is bullshit. Tipping is a solution for low wage workers to earn more, not a reason for businesses to pay them less.
4. Tips shouldn't be expected. I was a server for years, and overall I made damn good money. The secret is to always have the mentality that nobody owes you a tip. You have to constantly earn it. At one point I went 6+ months in a row with every table tipping me. No stiffs. Other servers would complain about a stiff at least once or twice a week. I'd always say to them "what could you have done better?"
5. If we eliminate tipping and instead charge customers more, we are still paying the same for the service, but without the option to give more or less based on the service received. It also removes the internal reward of feeling about giving somebody some extra money. People LIKE to tip.
I always feel awkward when I go to a fast casual type of place and they flip the thing around to sign with my finger and theres the option for a tip. Like what. no. why you puttin me on the spot.
Yeah, if it's not a luxury, they shouldn't be shoving a tip screen in people's faces. I had my phone repaired awhile back for about $150, and the phone repair shop shoved a tip screen in my face with 15% being the lowest option. Wtf.
