Spoken like a woman who has never waited tables to pay for her rent. Just who is this Ida Bae Wells? Fuck her

Sounds like someone is trying to come up with an excuse to justify the fact that they are a shitty tipper. Talk to anyone who has waited tables.
A new study finds many waiters and waitresses feel that black Americans generally tip less than restaurant diners who are white. The study, by a researcher at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, found that blacks tip on average 20 percent less than whites. In addition, restaurant workers of all races dislike waiting on black people because they assume the tips will be less no matter how good the service. NPR's Juan Williams reports. -

My friend was a waiter at the Heathman in downtown Portland and the bane of his existence was No tippin Clyde the Glide. My daughter waitressed in Eugene part-time while a student and her beef was with native Chinese. Sexual harassment and crummy tips.RaceBannon said:No tippin Scottie Pippin is no racist

Had plenty of dinning experiences with members of my wife's family. They're all lousy tippers. I'll pick up the tab and tell them they can leave the tip and they still tip like crap. I don't know what it is but blaming slavery is pretty fucking pathetic.WestlinnDuck said:

As someone who worked in the service industry in college, this isn't going to move the needle.
Let's just say libs don't tip. -

I was a waiter at Sunriver near Bend Oregon and in the San Juan Islands at Roche Harbor. Minorities don't tip for shit. When I started in Roche Harbor, one of my older fellow servers told me up front "don't waste your time trying to drain tips out of sail boat owners (blow jobs as we used to call them) and minorities. They don't tip". She was so right.SFGbob said:Sounds like someone is trying to come up with an excuse to justify the fact that they are a shitty tipper. Talk to anyone who has waited tables.

One particular summer in Sunriver, they had an NBA All Star week and the place was flooded with NBA players and NBA brass and all their families. Virtually everyone from the canoe excursion leaders to the wait staff and room service people were bitching. Tips were few and far between and when you did get one it was 10% or less.
Not sure why it was that way and don't know if it still is, but your quote is right on the money from my experience. -
Do they understand the bare minimum expectation should be 15% unless the service was bad? Do they understand that most people with decent means and a modicum of human decency tip 20-30%? Moreover, do they understand how to determine what 15-30% of the tab is? I ask because many people surprisingly do not.SFGbob said:

I’m a 20% max guy. And it goes down from there if service sucks. But it never goes down past 10% though.

Here's something I've always wondered about tipping. If you order something to go do you still tip and how much?Kaepsknee said:I’m a 20% max guy. And it goes down from there if service sucks. But it never goes down past 10% though.

I love it when stereotypes are supported. I love it when they are contradicted as well.

I suppose it depends on what kind of establishment the place is. If it's a large restaurant, the cooks get paid differently than the wait staff so no unless you want to give a few bucks to the hostess or whoever packed it up for you.SFGbob said:

Not fast food. There's a sushi restaurant that I often place orders to go with, I never know what to leave as a tip.RaceBannon said:

To me it is a service tip. I don't tip unless some service is involved. Me at Starbucks for takeout, no. If I was going to sit and drink it and take up a table for an hour. Sure. Me at the drive thru at MacDonald's? No way. Never punish your wait staff it the restaurant is understaffed. I'll drop the tip, sometimes to nothing if the wait staff is lazy and I'm waiting because they are phucking around. If Costco doesn't have toilet paper, it ain't the fault of the checker.SFGbob said:

I always feel awkward when I go to a fast casual type of place and they flip the thing around to sign with my finger and theres the option for a tip. Like what. no. why you puttin me on the spot.

At the grocery checkout
Would you like to help hungry children today?
Hell no!
Always gets a laugh and they don't notice that I didn't help hungry children today -
I'm a good tipper, and I don't feel awkward. If they come and take my order and bring me my drink or food fine. If I walk into a chain driven Sushi joint, then no.Pitchfork51 said:I always feel awkward when I go to a fast casual type of place and they flip the thing around to sign with my finger and theres the option for a tip. 10% for takeout is standard. Alotta places tipshare with back of the house (chefs), especially sushi when they are more artists than chili's.SFGbob said:

I'm also biased and over tip everywhere I go. -
Since Covid I'm just thankful that the person showed up to the job and is even reasonable friendly and competent. I don't think I've left a tip less than 25%.WestlinnDuck said:

Racist or not, $2.00 was pretty standard among exactly one demographic of the population, even to their own. It was a fucking joke, but we just rolled with it and turned the tables as fast as possible.
Hilarious that we used to hate Canadians and Europeans because they only tipped 10%. -
I worked in nice joints all the way through college, and I tipped out the bartenders, hostesses, bussers and the line from my wad. When 5 or 6 waiters are all doing the same, each guy on the line walks home with about an extra $20-$25 in his pocket every shift he works. Bussers get even more tips because they earn less per hour than the guys on the line, and waiters were paid sub-minimum wage while declaring no less than 8% tips on their sales.RoadTrip said:

If you're good, you're averaging 18% and clearing 13% on a typical night shift, so the 5% non-taxable bonus is a gift for busting your ass.
My experiences were great, the system worked, Seattle won international awards for having the best service industries in the world and everybody was happy.
Then came the lazy, entitled, untalented socialists fomenting their revolution from shitty, overpriced, fair-trade coffee shops where the tip jar became a fixture like the penny trays at 7-11. Tipping shifted from a reward to a tax and it's been downhill ever since. Service in Seattle almost uniformly sucks compared to 20 years ago.
Welcome to the totalitarian world of mandatory everything.
Fuck Off, Socialists. You ruin every fucking thing you touch. -

That's a good insight that I've never ever thought about. -
I only tip for exceptional service. If you suck, expect to be rewarded with fuckall.
