I appreciate an actual attempt to explain it.Bob_C said:Last 12 months there have more than 2x the amount of single minor encounters at the border vs 2019 and over 3x in single adult encounters. That’s with roughly the same number of border agents.
Read a Huff Po piece from 2014 that estimates between 60-80% of under 18 girls are raped on their journey to the border. Probably a bullshit number, but I don’t write the rules. So unless the cartels have softened, why would we assume that raw volume of people headed to the border doesn’t lead to more rapes?
I read the Huffpo article and while the links to the studies are dead, I’m willing to concede those numbers. I think we’d all agree there has been some exaggerating of rape statistics but you could cut those numbers in half and it would still be horrible.
But I would point to this part of that article
The assaults are so common that many women and girls take contraceptives beforehand as preventative measures.
So some of them know the risks going in and still choose to try and cross.
My response is let’s make it safer for them to cross. Yours is let’s make it so horrible for those that are desperate to cross that less will try. Hence, the cruelty is the point. -

Discouraging the attempt is kind. Opening the borders and allowing the rapes isn't
Hence your cruel -
TKS just wants oppressed people to have safe passage to the USA, free healthcare for all, free education for all, a living wage for all and LQBTQ rights. I guess that makes him a bad person to you wing nuts.

How does making it safer for them to cross eliminate rapes leading up to them crossing? If it was “safer” wouldn’t even more rapes occur as even more people would be trying? Cruelty would be putting sharks in the Rio Grande.TheKobeStopper said:

If they weren't invited by our criminal in chief they wouldn't be getting raped. You voted for this. This is your fault. Own it.TheKobeStopper said:

Just because you can imagine something worse doesn’t mean it’s not cruel.Bob_C said:

This is a pretty consistent disagreement between right and left. When it comes to things like immigration or abortion, the right prefers to be extremely heavy handed, to the point that IMO it crosses into cruel and unusual. The left prefers to acknowledge people are going to do these things and how can we make it safer.
Like that article says, some women were taking contraceptives before leaving. They knew the risk of getting raped was there and they still chose to try. Think about how fucking cruel you’d have to be then to stop them from trying.
