So true... my mom was the state of Washington Republican chairman and managed the election campaign for Dwight Eisenhower in 52, 56 and also Nixon's campaign in 1960 in the state of Washington. The infamous [and true] dead Kennedy vote in Cook County was the difference in the 1960 election which is why a lot of people have historically insisted that the only way to have a clean election is to require in-person voting with an ID check at the polling place, and a periodic real-time background check to establish the credentials of the voters that are listed on the registered voters roll.
As a solution that is unfortunately naive to think that solves the problem, however that is a logical first step. In spite of that, the layers of opportunity for fraud that exist with the ballots themselves, who is listed as a "registered voter", the digital machines involved in the voting booth and the counting + certification process means that there literally is no way to effectively oversee the legitimacy of ANY election which is why you hope to see elections that are not close in the first place.
Hacking the process for fun and profit is also an incredible catnip exercise for those inclined. This reminds me of the time I got a phone call from a bill collector seeking repayment for Pizza that my cat Keats had apparently run up on his credit card.
Totally agree with SFBOB, the game-changer was the covid based protocol of sending out ballots to every registered voter... this changed the dynamic of who would actually get around to voting in such a systemic manner as to create a new day for the Democratic party nationally. On the other side of it, the opportunity to harvest illegal votes is now a legendary fact, so it will be interesting to see how this evolves.
