Also, there will be more deaths from opening, even if there's 20 total we will hear about blood on Trump's hands and sacrificing granny for the economy . The dem governors are going to get a hard pass on that from the media for heroically having to figure out that "grim calculus". As it stands they'll also get a large amount of blame for their states' Economy imo since we have the laboratory of democracy going with different openings.

So while pushing opening might be the "right" thing to do where's the political motivation to do so? There's no political win to be had there and better to pass than raise at this point.

This is where I see the “defend Trump at all costs” in the Tug. You are a lot better and I expect as much.

    1. On sincerity. Bullshit. Nobody changes that fundamentally that late in life. It’s purely political. Which I don’t mind, if there’s a play with which I agree. Agree to disagree on this point because it’s unprovable. It’s basically the last thing I’d ever believe about Don, good or bad. You may as well try and convince me that Melania chose him because of his personality.

    2. Again, I thought Trump’s charm is that he’s NOT a politician. That he makes the hard decisions for the right move for the country. This ain’t the right move. It’s next to useless for the country, as you well know. It’s pandering to the religious right to stoke up the base. If we must do this in some kind of roll out order, then the right move is business first, then schools, then social organizations. My feet are taped to the pedals on this one.
Do you have me confused with @RaceBannon? I've never been a fanboy as documented and was and still am a supporter of policy and not politicians. That doesn't change the fact that I attempt to understand their character, personality, and decisions so don't twist.

I think Trump is sincere in HIS religiosity full hypocrisy as inherent to kit and kaboodle(do you not know any religious folks that fit that bill? something something stick in my eye vs. your eye). Kind of like young Georgie but with lots more narcissism and ego in the mix.

My guess is that he's motivated by his own views of religion to pick that specific fight. I don't see it as being some political 3D chess move as a fanboy might.

I think he's unsure of the right course of action as far as opening business is concerned and loathe to make a stand without that confidence. It's also the type of thing that I think very few people except for small business owners and economists understand the difference between 30, 60, and 90 days of shutdown.

My argument is that Trump is waffling(as he has much of the pandemic) and picking fights he has strong feelings about so I don't know where "defending him at all costs" comes in as a response to me.

It's not really a response to you, qua you. It's a response to the abstract you. I don't where I'm going with this.

The only thing I care about is prioritizing the economy over incidental special interests of any kind, much less one that is such a low priority right now. It has nothing to do with hating Christianity. Christ I'm a Catholic (nominally anyway). It's just a move that screams for the return of the WTF button.

I agree 100% that he's unsure of the right course of action and that he's waffling and that this presented as low hanging fruit. We're entirely aligned on that important point. So in that respect, to me, it was political to pick the low hanging fruit so that he could respond to Willie's challenge to "do something." It also has the added benefit of entirely firing up his base. Of course.

Where we probably part company is whether he actually gives a shit about it, even in the more cynical version you proffer. Everything I've read about Trump tells me the student of Roy Cohn doesn't have those kinds of feelings, manufactured or otherwise. I just don't buy it; but that doesn't matter. I don't really care whether or to what extent he cares about anything. That's more a debate with the people who absolutely love the guy and ascribe to him only the purest intents ... they have feelings too. I, rather, care about what he does and where he spends his energy.

I don't know where the tipping point is relative to the continued hibernation of the economy. And I've thus far been spared the consequences of our current shut-down policy (other than I'm assuming there'll be no bonuses in February). But eventually we find that none of us are immune. It is with that sense of humility that I view this as something that needs to be fixed forthwith. If, somehow, the Church winds up being the catalyst, I will gladly eat crow and give Trump all the credit. Otherwise, I'm not finding the "she really showed those liberal Church haters" all that thought-provoking. It feels like political fucking around to me.

FTR from what I read 60 days was a huge tipping point for small businesses....which we've already passed. Bye-bye mom and pop on main street.

90 days is the next major tipping point for big businesses where we start to grab our collective asses and kiss them goodbye because those jobs AREN'T coming back in the next decade. That's when I'd really start to worry about a great depression instead of a recession though I'm not sure we aren't close to that for us? little guys already.

    Worrisome.

The one confounding thing is that housing still seems to be hanging in there to some degree. I get opportunistic buying, but the last thing I'd do right now in the light of all this uncertainty is take a flyer on a house and a big mortgage. You gotta live somewhere I suppose.

Also, expect a three month to six month lag before "the public" wakes up and realizes our collective asses are fucked from this stupidity. It will be chinteresting to see the Trump vs. DNC/Media spin this will take into the election.

One of the wife's clients is a bankruptcy lawyer firm, they are completely swamped and have waiting lists for filing at this point.
