I also was a history major in the 70s, but at a time when actual history was analyzed and taught. Critical thinking and writing were rewarded and at the time there was little PC indoctrination and generally US history and Western civilization was a priority. Sociology and political science, however, were already thoroughly contaminated by the commies. Today, at even so-called religious institutions, like say Baylor, liberal arts at the major universities are regressive indoctrination centers not centers of learning. Look at AOC and her “economics” degree from Boston College. Journalism programs certainly are not promoting fair and balanced reporting. When free sh*t, lying and a lust for power are the driving forces behind todays little progressive fascists – then our educational institutions are complete failures.

I think you take an exaggerated and selective view of our educational institutions. They pump out smart and effective people who are taught to think. My kid just graduated from a place you no doubt would score as an indoctrination center, and the the truth on the ground is that it's not really true. It's a liberal place, because young smart kids often tend to question and are full of idealism because life hasn't beaten it out of them yet. And still, kids are going on to all manner of places and careers that are hardly bastions of socialist thought.
Sure, they question things a lot. That's what you should be doing right after college. There's nothing wrong with studying view points outside of the boundaries you mention above. I am certain that Plato, Aristotle and Socrates would ask you what you're so afraid of. Critical examination of the "other" didn't frighten them. I'm about as capitalist as they come. And that made me a better thinker. Hiding me from it would have rendered me a lesser educated person. My advisor in the Philo department, Ken Clatterbaugh, was a card-carrying Marxist and one of the best and smartest professors I ever had. He also wrote my recommendation to law school.

I'm pretty sure Clatterbaugh was one of the people that convinced me living in Academia was a sure fire way to have a myopic philosophy despite being extremely smart. I was speaking to one of my D's professors (science guy) about this and that after graduation, and he actually said out loud in response to something I said that he was glad I mentioned what I mentioned because "I'm in a bit of a bubble here."
Still, Ken was one of the professors who taught me how to think. Not "what" to think, but "how" to think. He didn't mind if I blasted Marx in a paper. But he insisted I do more than base my view on simplistic emotional bleeding, as our local retired cop tends to favor. To do well there, I had to understand Marx to begin with before I could write about a paper about anything having to do with it.
The Philo department at UW is a hidden gem. I assume they're still safely tucked away up on the top floor of Savory Hall where 98% of the student population don't dare (or care to) set foot. I remember how shocked people outside the major were when their shit papers would come back full of red ink and a "D+" grade on it. People think that department and major is easy. It really isn't.

edit: Did well in a Logic course there, but that was harder than I thought it would be as well. I basically took these two courses the same quarter thinking they would be easy A's, because I think I had business statistics and some other math class for Econ that quarter as well, and instead ended up getting raped by the Philo courses so I never took another one. No easy A in Philo. Fuckers.
Most people I know did fine in intro to logic. 120. Then some tried intermediate, and many were uncomfortable but go through and said "no mas". The brave who went to advanced didn't enjoy it. All classes were also full of math and the version of comp. sci that existed back then.

There was this one really old dude who taught an intermediate survey course that covered Spinoza, Descartes and that whole crowd. He was old school. Yale guy who taught there for years. Super nice, gentile classic old professor. But his grading was fucking brutal. He would write on the board in barely legible notes for 1.5 hours, and those of us who figured out early that you had to write every single fucking thing he wrote did ok. Anybody who tried to answer shit on their own on the exam got ass blasted because, let's face it, it was over everybody's head.
It might be my single greatest academic accomplishment that I got a 3.7 in that course. People would be whining to him after class about a 2.0 and he'd genuinely look at them perplexed and answer that a 2.0 in his class was perfectly respectable. I got that 3.7, btw, by fucking plagiarizing his words in response to the right questions on the exam, which took three blue books to finish. People who were legitimately serious students got below a 2.0 in that guy's course. Trail of tears I tell ya.
Hardest course I took was a seminar with the grad students, which you had to do to graduate with departmental honors. I was the only undergrad in that course, and I'm sure I got laughed at once or twice and I've just blocked it out. Professor just gave me a 3.3 or something to be nice.

I got my ass handed to me in a "Philosophy of Asian Religions" course in Savory. My ass hurt for weeks taking that class. Philo was no joke.
This happened to so many fucking people. I vividly recall this. Frat boys would come in and discover there was nothing in the Frat House "file" to help them cheat for the exam, because there weren't many exams. Many would have someone smart write their papers, but of course, the classes contained a lot of nuanced understanding you'd only get from being, you know, in class, so the smart ghost writer had no chance at hitting the critical points the prof was looking for. Lots and lots of "D" grades that should have been Fs no doubt.
There was this one really old dude who taught an intermediate survey course that covered Spinoza, Descartes and that whole crowd. He was old school. Yale guy who taught there for years. Super nice, gentile classic old professor. But his grading was fucking brutal. He would write on the board in barely legible notes for 1.5 hours, and those of us who figured out early that you had to write every single fucking thing he wrote did ok. Anybody who tried to answer shit on their own on the exam got ass blasted because, let's face it, it was over everybody's head.
It might be my single greatest academic accomplishment that I got a 3.7 in that course. People would be whining to him after class about a 2.0 and he'd genuinely look at them perplexed and answer that a 2.0 in his class was perfectly respectable. I got that 3.7, btw, by fucking plagiarizing his words in response to the right questions on the exam, which took three blue books to finish. People who were legitimately serious students got below a 2.0 in that guy's course. Trail of tears I tell ya.
Hardest course I took was a seminar with the grad students, which you had to do to graduate with departmental honors. I was the only undergrad in that course, and I'm sure I got laughed at once or twice and I've just blocked it out. Professor just gave me a 3.3 or something to be nice.
More story time with Uncle Creepy.
Hahahahaha funniest one I took was the "philosophy of dance" which was offered concurrently with the dance department. 30 young ladies with killer athletic bods and no brains, me, one other philo guy, and a female philo prof who was also a semi-pro balerina at some point(she was easy on the eyes too). It got to the point where we just felt bad for the prof. She was doing her best and trying so hard but you could tell none of these girls were getting any of it. By the time we got to the final there were about 10 people left and the teacher was giving us huge extra credits for simply going to dance recitals and then writing a one page paper relating it to ANY of the subject material. You could tell she was desperate to not flunk the last of the girls that had gutted it out. Quite the reverse of the creep, we got tired of it being a three person conversation and did our best to include anyone willing to make a point or speak up.

Took that class over one summer. Taught by this hipster dude who was a freshly minted PhD from Penn. Good guy. He let me take the final in Magnuson Park while he played tennis (poorly).
If I had to pick one single course at UW that I would cite as 'most valuable', that would be it. Deduction, induction, logical fallacies ... all that shit. Also took another course from him, forget what it was called, where we went over all the abortion debates. He and I were the only men in the room. The other like 12 students were women, many of them middle aged just taking a night class. Holy shit it was hard to make a single fucking point in that class. At times he'd look at me as if to say "Dude, I get it. Just drop it. Give up. We're not getting anywhere here."

Some word of mouth oral tradition shit to help you out with the standard classes, but nobody had ever even heard of half the Philo Departments courses, much less taken them.
