You make winning your conference an automatic qualifier there's absolutely no reason to have any good out of conference games. Teams would play nothing But Montana Sacramento State. SEC will get two teams in every year and probably Notre Dame as well.

Fucking BS. Don't be an idiot.
The whole point of having the at larges is that SOS would be paramount for those spots. So it would encourage MORE big time games because they won't hurt you if you lose and win your conference and you'll NEED them to get in as an at large.
I assure you Dennis that in an NFL hating competition, I can hold my own with anyone here. And there's a hell of a lot more than just(now diminished) Bowls which make CF a far better product than the NFL:
For example: - Better tailgates - Better Fans - Better pageantry - Better (non generic) stadiums - More exciting games and varying schemes - TBSing - Try hard kids of all population groups playing for the love of the game and a free education
I can go on and on.
College football is easily the best sport in America because of its idiosyncrasies and regionality.
Pro football is a boring sport for people who like to get in heated debates about which corporate business is better than the other:
Nike vs. Adidas Coors vs. Bud McDonald's vs. Burger King

Duh. Coors Banquet Beers kicks Bud's ass. The boy's are thirsty in Atlanta and there's (Coors Beer) in Texarkana and we'll bring it back no matter what it takes.
Look, I think your proposed solution has a lot of merit. Sometimes, my inner nihilist just says fuck it and go faggy NFL style, which would have some cool matchups that we don't normally get to see- e.g., #4 UW hosting #12 Okie Light in Seattle in 2016.

This is easily the case. Just have the bowls then do the current system on the final two.
There is literally no good reason why to not do it this way...
When I was FUCKING NINE YEARS OLD... I said 'Mom, there should be a bowl called the Cherry Bowl (great idea, I admit) where the top two vote getters in the AP play and they should do it the week in before the Superb Owl when no one plays'.
Fuck 4 or 8. They both suck a BFC. Either go back to the old ways (not an option) or full on FCS style 16 team play-off. I want my home playoff game in December in Husky Stadium damn it!
Why is that superior to this system? Other than getting rid of the bowls and totally devaluing the regular season - what does it accomplish?
For starters it would lead to 15 post season games that all matter AND that I would want to watch on TV. This is a hell of lot more than we can say about the current model. The current bowl system is already so devalued, part of me want to just say fuck it an go NFL style. I know GA/OU or PSU/USC made for great TV, but those weren't true GDOTA Bowl Game. Regular season still matters a shit ton because seeding (i.e., home field advantage is all important). Win your conference and you are guaranteed a top 5 seed.
Jesus fucking Christ.
Christ - there's no bad ideas in a brain storming session. There are some aspects of yours which I really like- i.e., using the old ways to whittle things down to a semi-final. This is great. But I feel like everyone would be pissing and moaning that some teams would have a far easier path based on first round match up- e.g., if really good Big 10 team got a Pac 12 cup cake.
THIS IS WHY I FUCKING HATE PEOPLE THAT WANT PLAYOFFS...
The whole fucking logic is 'do it on the field', right!?!?!?
WELL THEN WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT SEEDING!?!? If you can't beat Bama in the first round it's unlikely you will beat them later. It makes no fucking difference when teams play. The idea that the final game is always the best two teams is FS.
It's not that way now and it never has been. The only way that kind of thing makes sense is when you have a structure with two separate divisions (like in the NFL).
The main fucking special thing about CFB is the bowls. Americans are so fucking stupid they want to ruin everything for the 'appearance' of shit.
PLAYOFF ARE NOT FUCKING GOOD AT DETERMINING WHO IS BEST. THEY ARE NOT.
They are good at determining who is the hottest team at the end of the season, possibly, to about 70% accuracy.
FML.
And in some cases in the NFL, you have the 2 best teams in the same conference and they meet in the conference playoffs like Seattle vs. San Fran in the NFC Championship game.
If you get great matchups early due to the bowl tie in system then fucking great. You get to watch all the great matchups, who cares if they play in the 1st round or 3rd as long as we get to watch.
CBS Sports had an article today talking about the move to 8 teams. 2 things stood out in the article.
First, like @Dennis_DeYoung said, this shit ain't going back, there's too much involved in it. ESPN will potentially pay $10 billion to keep the playoffs on their next contract.
Second, some ass clown was quoted as saying something like "there's no easy to figure out how to make it 8 teams. I almost had an aneurysm when I read that.

That would kick so much ass. A modicum of 1 v 2 whilst preserving the best of our Peculiar Chinstitution.

I swear to fuck that 85% of Americans think that whatever is hot on TV today is the pinnacle of human existence and needs to guide our path forward.
Oregon has flashy uniforms?!?! LET'S HAVE THEM TOO!! THAT MUST BE THE RIGHT WAY!!!
LET'S DESTROY EVERYTHING GOOD ABOUT WHAT WE DO SO WE CAN JUMP ON A BANDWAGON AND NOT HAVE TO THINK!!!!!

The best solution - which no one ever talks about - is to just play all the bowls, old timey style and all and have the AP vote #1 and #2 and have those teams play a game for those that care 2 weeks later. This is how we beat @creepycoug to win our undisputed NT in 1991. https://www.si.com/vault/1992/01/13/125776/the-dream-game-would-you-believe-it-washington-beat-miami-in-the-battle-of-two-no-1s
