This is also - by the way (looking at you @TierbsHsotBoobs) - why recruiting probably matters MORE for Pete than any other coach.
Recruiting is really two different things: 1. The ability to identify talent. 2. The ability to sell those people on coming to your school.
Recruiting matters more in both cases for Pete because... if his appeals don't work as much with FS black kids, and the majority of recruits are FS black kids, we are going to need to hit at a MUCH HIGHER rate than average with the kids we recruit.
It's fine if Pete wants to only recruit OKG types, slow strategy whiteys or whatever... but given that those players are only going to be about 30% of the players in CFB, we better fucking identify them correctly and convert.
It can be done, but we are self-handicapping on the front end to get back end results. It's a strategy, that's for sure.

Seriously though @Dennis_DeYoung - how do you modify the sales pitch for FAST STRATEGY? Do you tell kids it's not the hardest thing they will ever do? Do you say look at all the dudes where are starting to pun in the League? More swag? My cracker ass doesn't know the answer.

I don't know the message because I'm not in sales, but selling concepts like "come here and drop dimes and be a playa" and "this shit is going to be hard" are not mutually exclusive messages. They can be combined together, in some way, into a tailored approach based on individual recruits.

As Swaye will tell you - us fast strategy people can be 'process-oriented' as well.
One team I think does a great job of this is Bama. They are all about 'process' and doing it the hard way... but they show off what it means to be big time AS A RESULT of the process.
So: look at our guys flash out in the NFL. We have a great time doing fun shit.
But in the end, you will be unbreakable and end up in the NFL if you trust the process and do shit right. And if for some reason you get derailed, you will be unbreakable in life and be able to go get it that way, too.
If you look at kids Bama gets - they get them all. They get slow/fast strategy kids. White kids, black kids, Poly kids, whoever. Because they sell the idea that their process leads to dominance.
They aren't selling Miami and Oregon type shit. They include that, but the center of the message is the process.
I think Gerald Alexander is a really good example of this as well. I think Lupoi is great at selling kids this way as well. This is why he fucks. Because he makes the connection in the kids' minds.
Never forget, FS kids are GET RICH OR DIE TRYING... so, you just say 'hey man, you want to be like our dudes, you want to get picked on the first day, have everyone scared of you? you do this shit here, you listen to what Pete says, you go through this grind every day... we will be looking at you on the first day of the draft. we will be looking at you on all american lists, we will be looking at you swagging out on SportsCenter. And if something happens to go wrong, you will learn a way to do it that makes everything like this. So you won't have to go wash cars or do dumb shit. You will know how to dominate the rest of your life the way you do on the field.'

Well if there's no mutual exclusivity, then we just need to fuck better. Winning more + better sales people will lead to more fucking. How'd we do with Fast Strategy recruiting in the early 90's the last time we were kicking ass on a regular basis?

It's one of the reasons recruits respond to Pete dominating them in pool.
Our NFL guys swag out too. Kevin King, John Ross, Danny "Hawaiian" Shelton, Sid, Mickens (lol) and Peters. Use them as examples. Budda doesn't swag out but he is a helluva player.

Not to forget that we are in the same divison as the masters of slow strategy recruiting of scrappy inner city white kids that can play. And white blacks
I'm looking at you David Shaw
Not sure if its a good idea to make that our strategy when you can't blame a kid for taking a Stanford offer

This is the thing, right... we have to somehow differentiate ourselves from Stanford in this messaging.
If we are trying to recruit similar types of kids, the 'go play for the most successful black coach in CFB and get a degree from Stanford' message is going to be a little bit difficult to beat as long as they're winning.
That's why I think getting guys on staff like Will Harris is important, so we don't end up with a bunch of Tevises. I like Tevis, don't get me wrong. Dude is a good player and can be good on a good team.
But those guys are rare. However, he's one of our biggest recruiting wins if you look at it objectively and there's a reason why: he's a white kid from Wyoming who couldn't get into Stanford and we beat Oregon for him.

^^^Niche market strategy which is essentially what you have to resort to as a tier II program. The trouble being, as poonted out, that Stanford already has a good handle on our same target market and *potentially a better product/value proposition.
As you said, once we start putting guys in the league(regularly) we should be able to better market to fast strategy kids and adjust our marketing approach. Until then, we are caught somewhere in the middle.
While DDY seems to have a good handle on it it seems like people still want an easy answer of "we need more black kids" and/or "we need a black coach to recruit fast strategy kids".
The racial component is socially constructed and pretty FS. There's not an easy way to group anyone into a simple racial group and say, "they genetically excel at such and such." As poonted out, you're going to have to get more and more specific to make any such claim ex. African Americans that are more than 80% of West African Decent belonging to such and such and such tribes...
This means that you are really specifying geographic genetic groups rather than racial groups. Those are two different things even if they have some overlap.
TLDR There's more genetic variation within a racial group than between racial groups. We DO need coaches who grew up fast strategy to relate to fast strategy youth.
