Particularly in basketball for the reason you mentioned.dnc said:
Yep, Smalls is going to be the victim of the same thing McDaniels has been victimized by - outsized expectations due to being overhyped.BeerThirty said:I think Smalls has been talked up a bit too much by certain Twitter pros. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't make it into 4 games in 2020. The base is there though, if he works hard he could be special
In Smalls' case he'll be around long enough to live up to those expectations, if belatedly.
In McDaniels' case I wouldn't be surprised if he's disliked by most of the fanbase when he goes pro.
People don't realize they are doing these kids a disservice when they build these massive expectations.
One and done doesn't mean they are worth shit in college. It means a pro team will draft him based on potential and sit him on the bench until he grows into a man
In the salad days of college basketball (the 80's) where kids stayed for 3 or 4 years no matter how great there still weren't that many freshman impact players. Isaiah Thomas who would be the inspiration for the naming of Isiah Thomas was one and he's an all time pro players
Hakeem would have been a one and done and he was super raw as a freshman, Ewing was in the final game as a frosh. Even Mike stayed three
For all the glitter Kentucky has one title under Calipari in 2012 thanks to AD
It's hard -
So you’re telling me that customized twitter videos sent to teenagers is not a good idea?dnc said:

I love how every year we talk about how we have these 4 stars in our class that should be 5 stars and we try and convince everyone and then we get our first 5 star since Shaq fucking Thompson and people are really out here trying to make a case that he isn't a 5 star hahahah
-
I love Smalls. He’s going to be great. If it’s play one, or his sophomore year, I don’t care. He’s going to be a stud. Let Coach K coach him up. If he can make Bowman passable or better, think what he’ll do with Smalls.
-
He is not likely an impact guy initially. So what? He is still gong to be a great player if he puts in the time. There are people out there that our offended if you don’t think Smalls is going to have a major impact as a true freshman.DodgyBloke said:I love how every year we talk about how we have these 4 stars in our class that should be 5 stars and we try and convince everyone and then we get our first 5 star since Shaq fucking Thompson and people are really out here trying to make a case that he isn't a 5 star hahahah
Not all 5 stars make an immediate impact. -
Because he’s not?DodgyBloke said:I love how every year we talk about how we have these 4 stars in our class that should be 5 stars and we try and convince everyone and then we get our first 5 star since Shaq fucking Thompson and people are really out here trying to make a case that he isn't a 5 star hahahah

"DE/LB Sav’Ell Smalls really underwhelmed this week. He wasn’t as athletic as advertised and he was dwarfed by many other defensive ends. He had a solid game and is an active player but is he a five-star?"DodgyBloke said:I love how every year we talk about how we have these 4 stars in our class that should be 5 stars and we try and convince everyone and then we get our first 5 star since Shaq fucking Thompson and people are really out here trying to make a case that he isn't a 5 star hahahah

The lack of athleticism is concerning. If he was underwhelming because he was raw or because he had no pass rushing moves, that’s fixable. If he’s a mediocre athlete combined with some prima donna in him, it’s not a good combination.dtd said:

If he was going anywhere but UW he would be a bust. 5 star, but he’s really a mid level recruit for us. There has been nothing in two years to be especially optimistic about. -
Looks like he needs to hit the weights and he looked visibly gassed.RoadDawg55 said:

I think he has some intangibles you can’t teach.
Work ethic? Does he want it bad enough?
Can lake or other coach motivate and coddle him into a Star... dare I say a man.... an nfl prospect.
They obviously feel they can and so LIPO. -
It’s tough to judge from these games, the D seems to be at a huge disadvantage vs the O

Yup, which is why the practices are more improtant.Theironshiek said:It’s tough to judge from these games, the D seems to be at a huge disadvantage vs the O

The game grades from bleacher report gave him a B+, which is what several other 5* guys were graded. The only other pac 12 guys I saw on the list were a Stanford K and that 2nd Oregon qb commit who both got the lowest grades

I know, but I couldn't find anything else. FWIW, BR is not the same as it used to bednc said:

FTR since people like to misread stuff, I still think Smalls is going to be very very good. -
I find all these objective comments to be racist and mean. Show some home town pride guys
-
Cyler Miles looked great in that game.

I thought his size and athleticism were the intangibles that couldn’t be taught. News that he is nothing special in this categories is not good.dirtysouwfdawg said:

These games are meaningless, but I would feel better if he dominated, as would everyone here. -
I was a bit Myles fluffed, but he average like 130 yards per game and had 14 TD’s and 8 INT his senior year. High school production matters just as much as college to the pros. If they dominate in high school, it’s an indicator that they probably can play well at the next level. If they don’t, it’s a sign to pump the brakes.MakaDawg said:Cyler Miles looked great in that game.
JTT won’t underwhelm in the practices and games next year. Neither will Huard. Take your screenshots. -
I'm hearing that you think Smalls is a C or D- player. You also hate the original Central District Ezells and have some very subtle contempt for all of the minorities of South Seattle. Some are even saying you moved to the east coast as a result of this contempt.dnc said:

Don't quote me on this, this is just what I'm hearing. -
Judge for yourself. He certainly has the size. Moves pretty good. Just needs to get in better shape and get his technique down. But with that size, he definitely plays as a freshman.
-
Size and raw underdeveloped athleticism is what Im thinking his intangibles are.RoadDawg55 said:

Lack of weight training/strength and lack of condition don’t always go hand in hand with Believed intangibles for Smalls.
Hence the rest of what I wrote. -
Players have developed under Kwait/Lake.
Smalls will be fine. It may take some time, but Smalls will be a freak. -

He's not explosive at the snap and doesn't seem to have a ton of answers when he's engaged by a lineman.
But he's still pretty good. He's been getting blown by TBSers for so long that I don't think he's been hungry for a while, ever? -
Less the TBSers, his father figure coach was tweeting and telling him the disrespect was unreal when he was ranked 2nd in the nation.Kingdome_Urinals said:He's not explosive at the snap and doesn't seem to have a ton of answers when he's engaged by a lineman.

2nd best high schooler in the nation disrespected at an unreal level. Yeah, no. That'll get in your head. -

It’s one of the reasons why @ dawg206 will always be blocked by me. The guy begged for Sav’ell but is constantly downplaying anything Sav’ell does, constantly attacking Garfield & inner city programs. He’s the type of fan I don’t ever want associated with UDUB. -
We? have used thousands of words to say something very simple. Savvy will be great if deep down Savvy wants to be great and is willing to work his ass off for it. All the tools you need are there. The training table, technique coaching and strength coaching will be available. Does he want to be great and will he work his ass off for it is the only unanswered question. We should know in 2-3 years. That's it.

I'm loathe to post the Donkey-Kong Suh picture again so I won't, but I'm more optimistic that considering that picture along with him enrolling this month, being local and having FSP at his disposal over the summer after some reality has been dropped on him, we should be able to have a pretty good idea if we should be crowning his ass this year. If his contributions are meager, I think that bodes pretty poorly for him reaching his potential.Swaye said:We? have used thousands of words to say something very simple.
