I don’t think Tryon was that much more raw coming into UW. I think the athleticism was always there, he just played for a terrible high school program and was largely ignored because of that.dnc said:I think Tryon is the complete opposite comp. Tryon was a physical late bloomer who nobody wanted because he didn't emerge athletically until his senior year but was still completely raw.
Smalls was a physical man child who the sole world wanted by halfway through his sophomore year and probably coasted a bit thanks to being coddled and having everything come too easy for him for awhile.
I think Smalls will take a year before he dominates to rediscover his work ethic and adjust to playing at a level where he isn't the best player just by showing up. But he isn't going to have to grow into his body or learn to play football like Tryon did after getting here.
He'll make an impact quite a bit sooner than Tryon did IMO.
Smalls is far from a finished product. His high school career basically stalling out after his sophomore year wasn’t because he developed early, but more because he was ranked high, got really caught up in the hoopla. He also had shitty coaching as Tryon did too.
I agree Smalls will make an impact before Tryon. It took Tryon until late in his redshirt freshman year to do anything. Smalls won’t redshirt, but I doubt he plays that much with Tryon, Bowman, Latu, and possibly Trice in front of him. I hope he flashes this year, but I won’t count on it. I will count on him his soohomore year.
Some pretend like Bowman sucks because he’s white, short, and was a walk-on, but he’s a solid player that was All Pac 12 2nd team this year. He might even be better than solid. He was 2nd on the team in tackles for loss and 2nd in sacks behind Tryon. He also forced 3 fumbles. Tryon and Bowman are getting the majority of the snaps outside and Latu should have a larger role in year two as well. -

No mention of Smalls at the Under Armour practices. Are the ranking the players again for a final one?

Confirmed: There will be another rankings update.

Yeah, Biggins said they do one after the all america games. I think he said Garbers, Murao, and Redman will likely see the biggest rise. He also said he likes Smalls where hes at but I bet he goes down to a 4 star

Also it's based on pro potential and Smalls has as much potential as he ever did.Neighbor2972 said:

Doesn’t seem super explosive in the game but it’s a small sample size

Asking for a Fren, but can you give me examples of being explosive vs super explosive?Theironshiek said:Doesn’t seem super explosive in the game but it’s a small sample size

He got trucked a couple times. Also his senior year stats are really weird for a 5 star.
-
Savell had a sack to basically end the game, was mostly a coverage sack but he had a really nice pass rush move the play before
-
Of course you’d say this.dnc said:

Yeah that was a cleanup sack. Coverage was good and someone else collapsed the pocket and he stuck with it to finish the play.Neighbor2972 said:Savell had a sack to basically end the game, was mostly a coverage sack but he had a really nice pass rush move the play before

He’s got a ways to go. He has potential but he’s not a real 5 star that you would expect. I know they say the ratings are for NFL potential, but most fans expect a 5 star to be immediate contributors. He could have a role this year, but it won’t be much. We are fucked if he’s a key player year one. I’ve been saying it for months. It’s going to be a year or two until he does anything.dtd said:He got trucked a couple times. Nobody has been impressed by his play in awhile. I like him, but the hype has always been overblown. That’s not bashing him, it’s just what it is right now. -
He didn't even have 30 tackles as a senior. I wish Oregon had landed him, but yeah, he's overrated until he isn't.RoadDawg55 said:

Not sure how reliable those stats are. I know he at least had a few tackles against Woodinville, but they aren’t listed on MaxPreps.dtd said:

He coasted after getting tons of offers his sophomore year.
The concerning part is that he wasn’t mentioned in the UA practices report and when he went to the local camp at PLU, he lost his battles against a Puyallup OT. A 5 star DL should be enough in Washington high school football to at least be respectable against the run. Woodinville ran all over them all night. It’s a team game but I’ve seen 3 star guys from Washington single handily keep their team in the game. I used to play against a few of them.
If you can’t currently get it done in those type of settings, it’s not magically going to happen initially at UW.
He needs to be developed. I’m not sure if it’s a motivation issue or if he’s just not that good. EWIWBI. -

Rivals National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell (who sucks) wasn't impressed:*****I would guess he drops to a 4 star on Rivals but stays as a 5 star on 247. ESPN stopped paying attention months ago so I doubt he moves there. So he should stay as a 5 star on Composite unless he drops bigly on Rivals, which I doubt.
Sav’ell Smalls, a five-star as well, will also be debated. He had a solid game but didn’t stand out much this week and I don’t see him as a freaky hybrid athlete. I expected more.

I think Smalls has been talked up a bit too much by certain Twitter pros. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't make it into 4 games in 2020. The base is there though, if he works hard he could be special

Yep, Smalls is going to be the victim of the same thing McDaniels has been victimized by - outsized expectations due to being overhyped.BeerThirty said:I think Smalls has been talked up a bit too much by certain Twitter pros. In Smalls' case he'll be around long enough to live up to those expectations, if belatedly.
In McDaniels' case I wouldn't be surprised if he's disliked by most of the fanbase when he goes pro.
People don't realize they are doing these kids a disservice when they build these massive expectations.
