THE PLAYOFF SHOULD BE 8

Here are the three simple qualifications:
1. Win your P5 conference.
2. G5 teams that go undefeated are auto-bids (if there are more than three than just use the fucking committee to rank).
3. Fill the rest with at-larges from the current committee system.
Don't allow teams from the same conference to play in the at-large game.
This has the advantage of
a) preserving classic bowl ties
b) preserving the meaning of every game in CFB
c) allows for this stupid power ranking bullshit every year that people seem to love, although I think it's FS
d) allows for the shit challengers from G5 to get proper fucked, but have a great story to get there.
e) add intrigue and fun as we don't know how many at-large teams will be selected.
First round (J1)
Rose: B1G vs. Pac-12
Orange: ACC vs. Big XII
Sugar: SEC vs. AL3
Fiesta: AL1 vs. AL2
Second round (J8)
Peach & Cotton with the same rules as now, committee ranks, highest seeds play closest to home.
Third round (J15)
Rotate locations on a bid process like the Superp Owl... or whatever. Possibly it should be played the week between the divisional championships and the Superb Owl.

Not needed. UCF is your national champion this year.

I fucking hate the playoff. I hate it. I want to abolish it as it makes absolutely no sense.GrundleStiltzkin said:I thought I knew you.
HOWEVER - I am going to admit that it exists and it's not going back. The only way to make it worthwhile is to do it this way. -
Fuck 4 or 8. They both suck a BFC. Either go back to the old ways (not an option) or full on FCS style 16 team play-off. I want my home playoff game in December in Husky Stadium damn it!

Why is that superior to this system? Other than getting rid of the bowls and totally devaluing the regular season - what does it accomplish?YellowSnow said:Fuck 4 or 8. They both suck a BFC. For starters it would lead to 15 post season games that all matter AND that I would want to watch on TV. This is a hell of lot more than we can say about the current model. The current bowl system is already so devalued, part of me want to just say fuck it an go NFL style. I know GA/OU or PSU/USC made for great TV, but those weren't true GDOTA Bowl Game. Regular season still matters a shit ton because seeding (i.e., home field advantage is all important). Win your conference and you are guaranteed a top 5 seed.Dennis_DeYoung said:

This is pretty much exactly the same thing I said in the other thread, but you said all undefeated shit tier teams, and I said one. You made yours more convincing than mine because you showed examples and other smart hard stuff but I'm stoopid so I didn't do that but I still thought it so it's all cool and I LOVE run-on sentences so there.

Keeping the classic bowl tie-ins for the first round is fucking stupid. The SEC would always get to avoid the conference winner from another P5, and there would be plenty of years where the #1 and #2 team would face off in the first round. Also, the G5 doesn't deserve shit just for going undefeated. They get one autobid, and the rest can fight for one of the two at-large spots if they're worthy enough.
Other than that, I agree. 8 is the obvious next step. -

Christ - the are no bad ideas in a brain storming session. There are some aspects of yours which I really like- e.g., using the old ways to whittle things down to a semi-final. This is great. But I feel like everyone would be pissing and moaning that some teams would have a far easier path based on the first round match up- e.g., if really good Big 10 team got a Pac 12 cup cake.Dennis_DeYoung said:

Everyone acts like this is some fucking competition to show who the best team is. Guess what? It's not. It's just theater.
The bowl tie-ins is what makes college football unique. A lot of people outing themselves as closet NFL fans here.
Fuck the NFL.
Also - In the past 10 years there has only been one occasion where there have been two undefeated G5s. So it's not something we'd really need to plan against.
Also, making undefeateds an auto-bid strengthens the regular season. -
16 teams.

The whole fucking logic is 'do it on the field', right!?!?!?
WELL THEN WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT SEEDING!?!? If you can't beat Bama in the first round it's unlikely you will beat them later. It makes no fucking difference when teams play. The idea that the final game is always the best two teams is FS.
It's not that way now and it never has been. The only way that kind of thing makes sense is when you have a structure with two separate divisions (like in the NFL).
The main fucking special thing about CFB is the bowls. Americans are so fucking stupid they want to ruin everything for the 'appearance' of shit.
PLAYOFF ARE NOT FUCKING GOOD AT DETERMINING WHO IS BEST. THEY ARE NOT.
They are good at determining who is the hottest team at the end of the season, possibly, to about 70% accuracy.

SIXTEEN TEAMS... is a fucking joke?
You think the #9-#16 teams are any fucking good?
For fuck's sake. Now we basically will have a regular season that doesn't MEAN FUCK ALL and then a watered down round of playoffs. We will no longer have any bowl games and the season will go on forever.
FUCK 16 TEAMS IN THE FACE.
What should really be done is bowl tie ins, then the current system to pick 2 teams, but that won't happen, so fuck it. -

I assure you Dennis that in an NFL hating competition, I can hold my own with anyone here. And there's a hell of a lot more than just(now diminished) Bowls which make CF a far better product than the NFL:
For example:
- Better tailgates
- Better Fans
- Better pageantry
- Better (non generic) stadiums
- More exciting games and varying schemes
- TBSing
- Try hard kids of all population groups playing for the love of the game and a free education
I can go on and on. -
College basketball has it right. Top 68 teams. Pool play, round robin, sudden death football.
-
Fuck no.
You make winning your conference an automatic qualifier
there's absolutely no reason to have any good out of conference games. Teams would play nothing But Montana Sacramento State. SEC will get two teams in every year and probably Notre Dame as well. -

The whole point of having the at larges is that SOS would be paramount for those spots. So it would encourage MORE big time games because they won't hurt you if you lose and win your conference and you'll NEED them to get in as an at large. -

Look, I think your proposed solution has a lot of merit. Sometimes, my inner nihilist just says fuck it and go faggy NFL style, which would have some cool matchups that we don't normally get to see- e.g., #4 UW hosting #12 Okie Light in Seattle in 2016.
The best solution - which no one ever talks about - is to just play all the bowls, old timey style and all and have the AP vote #1 and #2 and have those teams play a game for those that care 2 weeks later. This is how we beat @creepycoug to win our undisputed NT in 1991. https://www.si.com/vault/1992/01/13/125776/the-dream-game-would-you-believe-it-washington-beat-miami-in-the-battle-of-two-no-1s

There is literally no good reason why to not do it this way...
When I was FUCKING NINE YEARS OLD... I said 'Mom, there should be a bowl called the Cherry Bowl (great idea, I admit) where the top two vote getters in the AP play and they should do it the week in before the Superb Owl when no one plays'.
FUCK THE WORLD.
