Another thought
There is a generational aspect to the views on race even among Blacks. Jim Brown spoke out against Kaep sort of and everyone latched on to it. But when Jim was a young man he was Kaep and more. I suspect in talking to my Black friend ( I have one you know) that as you get older and more successful and have less negative contact with the police your views tend to change as well.
If Ray Lewis hadn't been playing in that Super Bowl and had great lawyers he'd probably still be in prison. (OJ Dream Team)
My wife got stopped a lot for DWB in Seattle and I think she almost went to jail a couple weeks ago during a traffic stop but I was eavesdropping and didn't get the whole story. But she also lived during the 60's and 70's in the ghetto so today may seem tame in comparison.
But young Blacks that still have a lot of contact with the police feel it even if we old rich white guys think they might be a little soft because back in the day shit.
Its cheaper and safer to get high and drunk at home. Nobody likes contact with cops, it just goes better for some of us. I think its a real problem in need of a solution.
And yes, if I ever need a cop I'll call and they better fucking come and protect me! -

Here is my experience on race from a world view; If you ask a black man in America what race he is, he will say black. If you ask a black man what race he is in France will say French. The same is true for England, Germany, Greece, Canada, Brazil, Africa, etc.
Black people to this day still aren't viewed as simply Americans, by any race including their own. The same holds true for Mexicans, Asians, and Arabs. The Irish, Germans, English, French, and Scottish that all moved here are Americans.
Like Chris Rock said, a one legged, white bus boy wouldn't trade places with a rich black man. It was true then and it's still true now.

Why does crack have a higher penalty? Because it is more addictive, it's probably the most addictive drug. It's also the most prevalent in the inner city. Stiffer penalties to try and discourage it's use. HTH

Crack was sold in bite size bits in the hood and that's why it got the tough sentences and a big part of our crowded prisons over represented by young Black males. -

I am old and am aware of where the drugs go. Much more than you would think. Tiny bit of crack didn't send you to prison but being a dealer did. Easier to pick off dealers with stings and simple surveillance in the hood than white guys dealing to known associates.
