Husky women's crew with historic victory

Having the right coach matters; the NT drought from 2002-16 for the women was a travesty.
-
But I thought that the firing of the old coach was a perfect example of the PC world gone amok and how modern college students couldn't put up with good old school male discipline!?!
What happened?!?????!! -
Discipline is important and all but what is one trait that Pete prizes above all else in coaches: the ability to relate well to the players. This is just a hunch, but I'm guessing Coach Yaz related to a 21 year old women just a bit better than the previous coach.Dennis_DeYoung said:But I thought that the firing of the old coach was a perfect example of the PC world gone amok and how modern college students couldn't put up with good old school male discipline!?!

Firing the HOF coach midseason because he hurt some feelings was PC bullshit.Dennis_DeYoung said:But I thought that the firing of the old coach was a perfect example of the PC world gone amok and how modern college students couldn't put up with good old school male discipline!?!

Hiring the kickass replacement was kickass.
Abundance. -
So the new head coach actually kicked the coxswain off the team that had previously led the mid season, hurt feelings revolt against the old head coach. If that's no abundance I don't know what is. Alas, we are no longer sexist and now a school that cares about BOTH men's and women's rowing.dnc said:

Ernst sucked ever since he came out of retirement.

Nothing. Nobody cared about women's crew then and they still don't now.Dennis_DeYoung said:But I thought that the firing of the old coach was a perfect example of the PC world gone amok and how modern college students couldn't put up with good old school male discipline!?!

So glad it was rowing and not some fag sport like football or basketball.
-
Because those brave young women from Yale ran naked into the administration office, women's crew is an NCAA sport. Since no male rowers wanted to streak, men's crew is not an NCAA sport.
Seriously. -
I scrolled to the bottom and all I've seen is text.

Wow I searched for some pics or something and stumbled upon the lamest article I've ever read.RavennaDawg said:Because those brave young women from Yale ran naked into the administration office, women's crew is an NCAA sport. Since no male rowers wanted to streak, men's crew is not an NCAA sport.
Seriously.
I skimmed through the thing to see if she ever actually wrote about the naked part and stumbled upon this gem
“This is our equipment. Not for girls.” The voice was closer now, as the men’s crew captain stalked toward our lifting station, hands balling into fists.
“Oh,” Chris stared him down, standing taller than him even though she was a foot shorter. “I see, boys. So you must pay more tuition than we do, right?”
No one moved for a long moment. Veins protruded from the captain’s neck. -

Cool story, but alas, there’s more to it than the men being loathsome to go streaking.RavennaDawg said:Because those brave young women from Yale ran naked into the administration office, women's crew is an NCAA sport. Since no male rowers wanted to streak, men's crew is not an NCAA sport.

Men’s Rowing is basically controlled by the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC). The EARC is mainly Ivy schools, plus a few other that "think" and “care” about Men’s Rowing- e.g., Wisconsin and Navy. Outside of the EARC programs, only Cal and Washington really care enough about Men’s Rowing to compete for NT’s and these two schools have pretty much dominated the sport for the past 20 years (except for a few years when those rich, preppy, Mark Zuckerberg haters were really good). The Eastern schools have never really felt there’s any benefit to going the NCAA route for the men, and keep in mind Ivy schools don’t even have “athletic” scholarships, rather, they have academic based financial aid. In terms of Cal and Washington, they have a number of full-ride scholarships that are privately endowed- i.e., they don’t affect Title IX numbers. Furthermore, it’s not like a bunch of schools on the West Coast are going to add men’s crew as a Varsity Sport (currently only UW, OSU, CAL and STAN have varsity programs on the west side) if it became NCAA. For women, however, it’s the ideal title IX equalizer, hence the NCAA benefit.
Speaking people not caring about rowing - the average college sports fan does not - but there are enough rich, old white dudes that do. What other non-revenue sport at Washington would be to offer full ride scholarships w/o funding for this from the athletic department budget?

These guys don't need no stinkin' scholarships.

I'm going to get untold amounts of shit for this, but I was actually in Windsor and watched it this weekend.
All jokes aside, it was surprisingly enjoyable. The place is absofuckinglutely full of these eastern upper-tier schools and their fans (with a few not-so-upper tier schools - hello Gonzaga, Ohio State, WSU and Central Florida). Cal rowing fans travel like Nebraska classy to an Orange Bowel, outnumbering Washington fans 5 to 1 EASILY. And there's the creep: ostensibly wearing the colors of the small New England DIII college he was technically there to watch (fuck off - no more information for you), yelling like a mother fucker with the other 8 Washington fans who showed up as the Husky women just fucking annihilated the division 1 field.
This is still a major sport back east; trust me on that. And there's some fun to be had watching some old, arrogant Princeton fuck mumble to himself as he watches his beloved Tigers get their asses handed to them by a Washington crew.
But the Cal group was the best. They beat Washington in season, and lost to them at Pac 12s, so they must've thought they had a chance.
They didn't.
It got really fucking quiet when Cal realized they were out of it. Stanford had a great finish but Washington led throughout and were never really in danger of losing.
There is not a school in the country with Washington's rowing tradition. Not one. -

@creepycoug I did not know you were so passionate about UW rowing as much as Miami football lolcreepycoug said:I'm going to get untold amounts of shit for this, but I was actually in Windsor and watched it this weekend.
