But Race, tuition has risen steadily for decades (and always exponentially higher than the inflation rate., kids have taken loans for decades (except kids with rich parents) and only recently is their attention being brought to it at this level by millenials, like its unfair and new to them .
There are many factors that contribute but some things never change, like governmental factors, the state of the economy, socioeconomic, geographic whatever excuse you want to use...but student loan debt is student loan debt. It is a product of effort, proper decision making, proper financial planning, etc. No different than every other generation and the costs of college. Feeling entitled and banking on government is millenial driven, and different than all other generations given essentially the same conditions, good or bad!
You made a decent point mentioning the value of non-college work (trades, etc). The world needs ditch diggers like you too.
But then you ruined the closest thing to a good post you're ever made by going on some old fuck "talkin' bout my generation" rant based on zero factual information. -
Trust me. I work my ass off. I understand what it takes to live in this world. My generation is getting absolutely screwed in tuition costs.
When you understand that the price value of going to an accredited university is declining because 95% of people out there are graduating off WikipediaU you'll have a better idea about how fucked the old boys concept of a college education truly is. Not to be the guy wearing the tinfoil hat, but something is going to give in the near future regarding the educational system.
The kids are getting smarter, information is increasingly available, anybody who has the "work ethic" you think is lacking in the youths of today will be able to achieve whatever they want.
At some point, the masses will say no. -
Education is one of the biggest rackets in this country. The advantage of college is shrinking while the costs keep rising.

You made some great points snuggles, but I had to deal with degree saturation too, and any decent employer isnt going to hire a guy from university of pheonix or evergreen over a UW grad. But to an earlier point, here are where the trades cyclicly reappear. Union tradesmen make big bank, and they make it fast. Their retirement benefits are a perk, not a 401k match. Workers already own a house and make 6 figures where guys like Freemonty are running up student debt on an alternative-lifestyle studies degree.
A good summer job, saving money getting an AA at a CC, transferring to UW and paying for school on your own gets you a leg up on the student loan crowd. Dig ditches in a high paying union summer and vacation job. Work ethic ABSOLUTELY still pays dividends.
Work on your trade while in school, go to work in your trade after college while your degree materializes. That gives one a huge head start while the online-degreed boofallos scramble around, fighting for a $22k/year entry level job. Experience is valued in many different ways by employers.
oh, you are not getting screwed in tuition costs. No different than my day on a relative level. Get that out your head. I saw mindboggling tuition Increases too and the market was saturated with degrees as well, so the "price-value" wasnt much different 20 years ago.. -

Couple poonts:
My Dad, before he retired over a decade ago, was making 40 bucks an hour as a Master Electrician in Dallas. For those who don't know, 40 bucks an hour in Dallas in 2001 was a VERY good living. Not hookers and blow money, but a damn fine living - nice big house, new cars, money in investments, and a pool. And, absolute job security. There are not enough masters to go around. He told me once that based off his views on the lack of new young folks coming into the trades and the millions of re-re's studying useless shit in college, that supply and demand would eventually make high end welders and electricians the new upper middle class. All the accountants and such would be the new lower middle class. Flip flop from the 70's-90's. I believe it.
I read somewhere recently that the rise in college costs were fueled by the availability of loans, but the rise in college expenditures has been fueled by a massive uptick in hiring administrative types for upper campus. People who bring almost nothing to the educational experience.
I think there is a weird inertia now where we graduate millions of kids from useless colleges with useless degrees, all while saturating a workforce that needs skilled labor more than another art history degree, while student loans make it possible to raise prices on education to the point where kids who picked a shitty degree now find themselves in low skill administrative jobs right back at the school they graduated from doing some useless tasks that continue to raise the prices of the education for those behind them. Run on sentences are cool. Fuck off.
Lastly, if I had a son right now, I would tell him to either get a degree in a hard science or engineering, or if he didn't want that, go spend a decade becoming a nuclear grade welder and make 150K a year, as opposed to a geology major making 50K a year sorting admin papers at Western.
For 75 percent of students, college is a net loss. Then again, fucking sorority bitches is priceless. -

either get a really applicable degree or learn to be a plumber or electrician. Those jobs pay 100k/year or better and have benefit packages MUCH better than a general company 401k and benefit packages The retirement packages are perks, they dont come from your paycheck. Anyway, not trying to hijack the thread. The Millenials are, indeed, entitled little bastards. They've grown up with everything handed to them. So, they still expect someone to swoop in and take care of them.
Get a degree that you can use to get a good paying job. Otherwise, go operate a deep-fryer and pay your debts.
The trades are definitely a good way to go, if college is not your thing... and you may be better off going into trades. You make money sooner and you don't end up with a huge student loan debt to pay off.
