Some ducks need an Owen12 to gain some perspective
“The Chip Kelly era, while it afforded the program this next level of growth, left a lot of people feeling like they didn’t have a connection to the program like they once did,” says Paul Swangard, managing director of Oregon’s Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. “It was the symbolism of a lot of things: The closing of practice, the building of those facilities, and just the feeling that it wasn’t as approachable a college team as it once was.”
Some of that was inevitable; some of that was a product of the choice Oregon and Knight made, in the mid-1990s, to elevate the program to an elite level. But some of it was specific to Kelly, who is unquestionably a brilliant football mind, but who is also complex to interface with and often seems trapped inside his own head. At one point, Swangard recalls, he found himself in the football office with a grandfather and his grandson, whom the grandfather presented to Kelly by saying, “Here’s your next great linebacker.” Kelly flashed an awkward smile and walked on without saying anything. -

All in all, a pretty good article. Bellotti, Peterman, and Helfrich are part of the Jim Sochor coaching tree from UC Davis. Helfrich and Peterman were both on Bellotti's staff in the mid-90's... Peterman as wide recievers coach, Helfrich as GA.
Remains to be seen how good Helfrich really is (he's 11-2 so far against non-shit-tier competition)*
* counts Tennessee, Virginia, Texas and Michigan State as non-shit-tier competition since they play in Power 5 conferences. -

There are Quooks that deserve 0-12. That grandfather story was awesome. It almost makes Phil Bleenor look good. Anyways, it's all over with Helfrich. Duck fans can say LIPO and I don't blame them because they still have a good thing going, but it's not going to end well. I love that he is Oregon's coach. Mariota is masking some serious issues. How many games would they win without him?

The good news for Oregon is two-fold. Metrics guy told me that any team with that great of a run, tends to at least be top 25 for the next 5 years. Also, it will take probably 3 years for the Chip Kelly effect to fade. The bad news is they had Chip, we had Sark. Now we have Pete and they have Helfrich.
They've also hired from within and the next hire will likely be an outside hire. The assumption is Uncle Phil will just pay for whoever the best hire is. I'm not so sure there will be a great fit available. I think their next coach will struggle to match even Helfrich's record. -

Predicting the demise of Oregon is so first decade of this century
They have earned the benefit of the doubt. They care about football and it shows.
IF UW ever gets it right we could have a NW golden age rivalry. It was close and hate filled when both teams generally sucked pre James. Since James came and then UW dropped football one side or the other has dominated.
It would nice to see both good, but I'll settle for just UW being good. I'm classy like that.
I just think it is a bit early to put the genius tag on Helfired. -

I think Roadie (and everyone else here besides Sven - he's the only one that would have fired Peterman at the 50 yard line after the Stanford game) is engaging in a bit of wishful thinking.
Helfrikth was more of a QB coach than the OC at both ASU and Colorado, and he's always done a pretty good job, except when Dan Hawkins was pushing his kid onto the depth chart.
I agree that prior to assuming duties at Oregon, he doesn't have much of a track record. Still, nothing here convinces me to come off of LIFPO just yet. You folks are engaging in confirmation bias for a coach who is 11-2 against non-shit-tier competition and is actually a pretty competent recruiter.
Still giving him his 15 games. -
