Good piece Stalin. As much concern as we must have over China's "rise", it is important to remember that we can still hurt them worse than they can us if it ever came to a shooting war. The US is energy independent. China is not. We've seen that movie before in the Orient.

Energy independence is now gone. Check the price at the pump.

I suggest you join @GrundleStiltzkin 's new book club. Energy independence comes from technological innovation. Not whether Bush, Obama, Trump or Biden is president.

It comes from a number of sources but right now it's petroleum, coal and nuclear based. Buying oil from our enemies just makes them stronger and us weaker. Wind costs more than it produces and generates massive toxic waste. Solar doesn't work at night. Ask Texas.

Who's setting the rules certainly has an impact on price. When fuel prices rise so does the price of every other item we consume. But when your donors own a zillion tanker rail cars and trucks you cancel the pipeline.

Both sides would go nuclear before losing. Meaning, both sides lose this one.

Prices and whether we are "energy independent" are 2 different topics. In the early 2000's The US was running out of domestic oil and gas and set to be ever more dependent on imports. Now we are not regardless of what the price says at the pump. If you want to criticize gas prices and the policies which contribute to such, fire away, but it's not due to our being reliant upon importing oil from the M.E. anymore and other foreign producers.

Wait til you get to the Dakota Access/Keystone XL chapter. Federal policy matters.
Of course it matters. Transporting oil via rail is beyond FS.

But the technological innovation which made us become energy independent happens regardless of who is President.

Humans are some smart monkeys, especially when they're in America and there is a buck to be made.

Hopefully, fear of the bomb is enough to prevent miscalculation by either side and the that Chinese are smarter and more competent than the Ruskies when it comes to nuke protocols.
