Sir Mells, 2022 3* DT, Henderson (Liberty), NV (Considering options)

Two cycles ago with Tuitele and Bandes which were major battles and huge wins. None last year. None this year though I'm a huge fan of the DT's he grabbed. Those dudes can play.sonics1993 said:I love Malloe and think he's a great coach but honest question, when is the last time he won a major recruiting battle?

It's really strange with Malloe. He either gets absofuckinglutely nothing or he gets every worthwhile DT in the footprint. There's really no in between until JTT heads to Oregon.sonics1993 said:I love Malloe and think he's a great coach but honest question, when is the last time he won a major recruiting battle?
Just sticking to rankings and other offers, Malloe cleaned up with consecutive classes bookended by nothing. 2017 was... crickets. 2018 was Letuligasenoa, Taimani, Bynum, and Nasili-Liu. 2019 was Tuitele, Bandes, Paama, Ngalu. 2020 was... crickets.
I completely stopped paying attention to recruiting outside of the in-state five-star guys for this cycle, but sounds like the gang here are pretty stoked on the two DTs for 21 also. Not sure how much of a battle either of them were to get to UW, but you can't possibly say Letuligasenoa, Tuitele, and Bandes weren't big time victories, and I believe every one of the rest had P5 offers as well.
Malloe's problem is that JTT exists. If he didn't, everyone would be pretty stoked on him right now. Missing the number one overall player right in your backyard, though... It's understandable why that would taint his recent record. -
Ballz is going wild
-
Malloe has signed plenty of defensive linemen others want. Getting kids out of Utah while Utah is actually a good program is worthwhile.
He does also seem to strike out every few years. It’s a weird deal. But this last cycle he signed two prospects that would be considered good for the west coast. I am sure other schools didn’t stop recruiting them and they did not seem to ever be in doubt. He has also helped with other front 7 prospects. -
Ballz scouting report
UW is not beating anybody without a stud NT like this who can stop the run. This kid is built like a refrigerator. He’s going to be a tank in the middle. Not a sexy pickup. But a good one. Nice to see Ikaika can recruit D-lineman who aren’t Poly. -
In the 2017 class Malloe had Marlon T committed for almost a year and if the early signing period existed back then he probably would be a Husky (unless he lost a ton of weight and needed to move to LA to be closer to his family in Oregon). He got Ali Gaye in the boat but would have needed to put in a Tosh like effort to get him eligible. The year after he almost landed Togiai before closing with Taki and Tuli.
Overall I'd say he's money with Poly recruits unless he's going up against LJ or has to deal with shenanigans from the family. -
He should have a good class this year. Burrell to UW is looking pretty good.
-
More than anything, we need a really strong defensive class this year. Last couple years the offensive class has been way better.backthepack said:He should have a good class this year. Burrell to UW is looking pretty good.

Our secondary is gonna be razor thin soon without some difference makers.bananasnblondes said:

Isn't Burrell a PK recruit?backthepack said:He should have a good class this year. Burrell to UW is looking pretty good.

We're not there yet, but could be in the next couple years. KamFab, Esteen, and Covington intrigue me and we could see a guy like Cam Williams, Asa, Hampton, or Irvin suddenly "get it" but yeah, we need a major haul at db this year. Gordon should be serviceable as a Molden replacement but may only stick around 1 more year. McDuffie will be gone after next year.AtomicDawg said:

I expect some of those guys to step up. But we are used to having all American type level players back there. Not all of them were but usually have a couple that are close to that level and people waiting in the Wings. I don’t have confidence in Harris to recruit or develop those guys. Don’t know anything about brown yet. At the end of the day this is lakes specialty and needs to figure it out.bananasnblondes said:

He's not a great athlete, but he's strong and can shed blocks. Not any worse than Tuli, for what that's worth. If he has better length than Tuli and can shed blocks at the next level, he'll be a good pickup.CallMeBigErn said:Do we see anything positive about these highlights?

Clearly a developmental prospect. Has size and strength but not a whole lot else. He's kind of a lumbering oaf at this point. -

I was only 14 for the first part of my sophomore football season. He's probably 15 years old in those highlights and is hauling around about 6 inches (height you fucks) and 150lbs more than most of us were at that age. A kid that age is going to look a bit awkward and slow at that size even if he's getting the best S&C training in the world.NorwegianHusky said:

Well, just taking the clips at face value, you were spot on. I had to remind myself how young he was. If those were senior highlights he'd look horrible.NorwegianHusky said:

Yeah, this is a tough one. Objectively, his film is not good . The response is, "yeah, but thats only his sophomore film. We haven't even seen him play as a junior or senior."chuck said:

I guess they see enough to be comfortable with it. I think that if his development goes to shit and he still looks plodding as a senior they'll find a way to steer him toward other programs that might suit him better. We've seen examples of this though I cant think of any off hand. -

The real problem is that any of our DL can be neutralized when a team gameplans around our 2-4-5.chuck said:

I'd love to see Kwait run a 4-2-5 against teams like Stanford where the DL just block all the lanes and force everything outside to our ends or CBs. -
Taimani was way too heavy this year. 340 is hard to move but it made it really fucking hard for him to move. They need to get him down to 315-320 man, badly.chuck said:

I actually seen his defense work well against the game plan you're talking about, but it takes the right personnel. They couldn't seem to figure out who that was this season.whatshouldicareabout said:

Tuli can get a push. Tainani seems to be more of a space eater. I think both can still get better. I would have thought tui and bandes would look better at this point but we have been spoiled the last few years with Senior level Shelton, qualls, Gaines, vita and Levi. I am sure some team some where may have had a better run during that time for Interior linemen but it can’t me that many.
We have decent numbers of kids that a lot of schools wanted at that position so I am confident someone will turn into difference maker.
