Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola cornerback Zakhari Spears (6-2, 181), knew that his visit to Washington in January was going to be a good one.

Armed with an offer from the Huskies, Spears wanted to soak in the atmosphere and time in Seattle and see if it was a fit for him.

Not long after his visit, Spears became the second commit to the Huskies in the 2021 class- and the first to commit to new head coach Jimmy Lake.

Spears joined five-star quarterback Sam Huard, who committed in November of 2018, as early Husky pledges.

In fact, it was exactly one month before Lake was named the head coach, replacing departing Chris Petersen, that Spears was offered by the then-defensive coordinator Lake and cornerbacks coach Will Harris.

But the relationship had started during the summer.

"Since I came in to contact with Coach Jimmy and Coach Harris in June at their camp, I just fell in love with the program," said Spears. "They hadn’t offered me yet, but they send so many DBs to the league, the academics there are really high and it had everything I was looking for in a school, that I kind of knew when they offered me, that was where I would go."

So Spears returned in January and was able to check every box before announcing his commitment.

"I committed shortly after I took my unofficial there," said Spears. "It was important that I made my decision early. One thing about Washington is, they look at everyone the same and everyone has a chance if they're a team-first dude. Like Myles Bryant, he was a walk-on and a Loyola guy, but they looked at him as an important part of the team."

Spears said being on campus and seeing Husky Stadium as he took the tour of the school was impressive.

"It was really cool because the school is right next to the stadium so you don't have to go too far," said Spears.

Spears said that the Huskies were always on his short list and their offer solidified it.

And he said the promotion of Lake further clinched it with the Huskies.

"If he wasn't named the head coach, I would have probably still picked Washington, but the DB coach becoming the head coach, that was a big deal for me," said Spears.

With his commitment, Spears becomes the first out-of-state commit to the Huskies in this class and while it's a strong year in-state, he said he wants to help with their recruiting efforts in California.

"I haven’t really reached out to any one person, but I know I will be out there recruiting at camps and 7v7 and at my school and try to grow this recruiting class and continue to build something special," said Spears.
