Caple Notes:
- Best play of spring: Eason during his reps with 1st team dropped a dime 40 yards over the shoulder of Opera Singer up the right sideline. Baccellia, covered by cornerback Kyler, snagged it with only his right hand.
- Eason led the first-team offense to a touchdown during the final team period of the day. He threw a slant to Hunter (which he finished by throwing a solid shoulder into freshman safety Cameron Williams at the end of the play) and a 15 yarder up the seam to Chincredible. Ahmed capped the drive on the next play with a touchdown run up the middle.
- Haener took the first reps with the No. 1 offense. He was sacked on his first snap on a blitz by Myles Bryant, and he only completed a tunnel screen to Chico on the first drive. He hit Ozzy a few times over the middle in later periods. (Eason hit Ozzy over the middle too, and by all accounts Ozzy has been lighting it up the last handful of practices. He gets talked about most of any WR)
- Kyler picked off Sirmon during 7 on 7. He also blew through a block attempt by Spiker to wreck a quick swing pass from Yankoff completed to Bynum.
- Bryant moved back to nickel, Molden back to corner and Williams took his first reps at safety with the No. 1 defense. It’s becoming difficult to ignore what Williams is doing in his first college spring. He came over to break up a deep pass attempt from Eason to Bynum, smacking Bynum as the ball arrived (though Molden also was in good position to make a play). Later he nearly intercepted a pass thrown by Sirmon, breaking it up with his left hand. As Lake said afterward, it’s still early. But Williams certainly is performing so far like somebody who will at least begin the season on the depth chart.
- Another name to add to the “keeps on showing up” category is redshirt freshman linebacker Ulofoshio, who had another “sack” Monday, getting to Eason to end an 11-on-11 series.
- The first-team offensive line looked the same — Trey Adams, Luke Wattenberg, Nick Harris, Jaxson Kirkland and Jared Hilbers — though the second-team line looked a bit different because redshirt freshman Matteo Mele was out with an injury. Fifth-year senior Henry Roberts stepped in at left tackle with that group, and Victor Curne stepped in at right guard.

I know this is slight hyperbole, but I’d be shocked if Jimmy Lake didn’t study the hell out of the Chargers’ 7DB defense that they used to beat the Ravens in last year’s playoffs. If Cam Williams starts for us at S this fall, that will be super duper. The thing about having great talent and great coaching is that people winning the job probably deserve it.
If you don’t have any talent and guys are playing by default, that’s bad. Yes, we are a bit thin at S, but ultimately we’ve got talented guys and talented options so if Cam wins it so be it.

Thanks for the props. Football IQ is real and Cam is great at making plays on the ball. Some guys have superior instincts and Cam is one of them. He’s a freshman I’m not worried about playing.WeakarmCobra said:

That's great and he's been one of the stars of Spring ball so far no doubt. But...he's definitely the best guy by default right now. Irvin has been injured all Spring. Gilchrist sucks and kept getting burned so they moved him to nickel. Bryant is the returning starter at nickel. There's literally nobody else at free safety right now. Maybe Kam Fab will start out at free safety when he joins the team over the Summer along with a healthy Julius Irvin and those two will make it a real competition? Either way, Williams' emergence is exactly what the secondary needed. Did Lake not know what he was doing then and yet we still sucked. It's a similar situation at safety right now. I have a strong feeling Gilchrist sucks ass. We are fucked at free safety if it's either Gilchrist or a Freshman starting for us. Obviously Lake fucked up somewhere recruiting that position because we don't have a RS Junior, sure fire, future NFL stud to replace Rapp that nobody is worried about.
