Chiang Mai....great place to live....best food I have ever eaten...the south is awful.....are you employed in the Mai?
Chiang Mai is actually considered the number one place in the world to retire based on cost of living, quality of life, culture... I lived in BKK 3 months and liked but fell in love with CM. My gf and I went to southThailand last year (Krabi) and although it was nice I was very underwhelmed by the sea. Snorkeling sucked! I enjoyed since my gf can't swim and it was fun scaring the shit out of her. I damn near killed a couple monkeys and after living here I actually enjoyed seeing some western bikinis on the beach.
I don't work here but I do volunteer a few days a month at a dog shelter and orphanage here and around Chiang Mai.

Me and 3 guys rented a house our last two years at UW from 91-93 and one worked for Sports Washington so we all got the magazine back in the JH days. I drive my motorbike by there often and they are open but they are a dime a dozen around here. I believe I only went once with one of my former GFs a couple years ago with her and a friend but I don't frequent joints like that because I get tired of the foreign losers that come to Thailand because they can't get laid back home. I go out to the lady bars a few times a year but mainly as a group with my local GF and another couple to enjoy some beer and to people watch.
