I said what I said. Nobody under 40 has chimed in that Godfather is great. They are both overrated movies. Believe me, I wanted to like them, and I don’t completely hate them. They are well made, but so fucking long and boring.I question whether you guys all really love the movie or if you feel you have to becuase it was drilled in your head that they are the greatest movies of all time.
Break free fellas.
What is a ‘great’ movie for those under 40?
For mobster movies I think the Departed is pretty timeless. Has all the qualities of something you can watch over and over.
Yes, also a very good movie. I agree. You have to pay attention in that one, and the cast is top notch. And, it's a nice departure from the Italian-mob genre and reminds us there were other ethnic mobs. I've spent a lot of time lately in Providence, RI (relevant to the move as you know), and whenever I'm there I can hardly believe that it was, or still is, the New England center for mob activity. But that's the view from College Hill and the greater downtown area. Then you take a drive over to Federal Hill, and you see it very clearly. Nice collection of Italian restaurants there btw.
I would put the Departed on par with Goodfellas. Casino is a notch down for me because Las Vegas, particularly how its depicted in that movie, is a depressing place to me. I've partied there plenty of times, but I really don't get the appeal.
I think the separator for The Godfather movies over others of the genre is that TGF was not cops and robbers / good guy vs bad guy, in the traditional sense. It was bad guys vs less- bad guys, and the length of it allowed the story to play out. They conducted themselves like traditional businessmen, with structure and standards, within their own mini-society. Politicians, police, the clergy, all part of the machine. I first saw it at age 12, and this created a fascination with it that continues today. And, Abe Vigoda...

I’m under 40. Godfather I and || are superior to casino and good fellas. As @creepycoug pointed out it’s a deeper plot and character development. Not about the shocking stupidity and violence of thugs which is a different type of movie all together. And woody Allen movies suck. Ffs this isn’t hard.

I rented GF 1 on Amazon the other night just to reconfirm my feelings in the matter. I've seen it over 100 times. Still am picking up little things here and there. The plot and character development are second to none.

Exactly right. Great summary. And, some of the bad guys in GF are ostensibly society's good guys: cops, senators, film directors, etc. Nobody is spared in GF. It's an unapologetic look at power structure.
Donnie Brasco is a good mob movie. Johnny Depp is a very good actor in mob movies. He’s also good in Black Mass as Whitey Bulger.
A Bronx Tale is more of a coming of age story with mob ties, but is also very good.
True Story: Ann Heche played Depp's wife in Donnie Brasco.
First time I saw her, I commented "That chick's a dyke."
2 or 3 years later she's dating Ellen and trying to hitch a ride on spaceships in the desert.
Anyway, I called it.
Not exactly @TurdBomber . She went back to dudes post Ellen.
She "experimented" like many women do.
Ah, you kids, I tell ya.
If you bang a dude in the butt, you're gay. Period.
Bisexual? Irrelevant. Who cares?
Same goes for the ladies. You know, equity and all that stuff.
The most annoying shit gay guys say is that they mostly hook up with straight dudes. I always tell them, those guys have some gay in them obviously. Now, who gives a shit what people are up to and when they are fucking, I certainly don't, but I've heard it from multiple gay guys in my life.

The 70s were all about length. Movies and songs
Most 7 minute songs are not Stairway to Heaven
Most 3 hour movies are not the Godfather
I didn't care much for the classic movies of the 40s and 50s. It doesn't mean that they sucked.
The 80s to now have brought us to quick edits and short movies. 90 minutes can seem long today
I find myself fucking around with my phone in the middle of shows
No attention span

And horse heads.
They aren't gay. They just have open minds.
