You seem focused on federal income taxes. Washington state just levied a .6% payroll tax that is allegedly for long-term care, but after analysis it doesn't seem to help much. I don't remember voting on it. State and local taxes are part of the overall tax burden.
Investing $500.00 a month for 40 years, starting in 1980, invested in a simple SP 500 index fund, would give you nearly $5 million in retirement funds. All of us who have worked our entire adult lives, have easily contributed that amount, along with our employer contributions, into the Social Security scam.
