Saying he could never win the big one only applies to the natty late in his tenure. Oklahoma won big games all the time. They put it on Alabama and saban in the sugar bowl one of his last years and caused that crazy cougar to fight someone in the stands.

Yeah his nickname was "Big Game Bob".
Plus, they churned out NFL talent like nobody's business when he was there.
Where the fuck is this Bob Stoops chatter coming from?
Couldn't care less who Fleenor thinks is realistic (is he even a big-time booster anymore?), and there's a quite a large fucking gulf between one of the greatest coaches of all time and Wilcox with his career losing record. Go get someone from that gulf.
Rumor is Stoops and Pete are tight and Stoops is interested. He's ready to get back into coaching but doesn't want to be anywhere where he'll be competing with/recruiting against OU out of respect to them. So the West Coast is ideal for him.
Who started the rumor?
I've heard it from multiple people who seem to have inside connections.
Stoops I believe made his bones as the D-Coordinator for those great Steve Spurrier Gator teams. So if the rumors are true and went that direction the offense would be the question mark.
His OU teams from what I recall were known for their offensive prowess. The defense tended to be the achilles heel.

His teams started with an elite defense. The secondary that won the Nattie was the tits and blew people up consistentl prior to when targeting was a thing. Later in his career they were better on offense than defense. They were never the problem on defense like Lincoln Riley had for a few years though.
He had good teams. Some defensive. Some offensive. He is a good CEO which is most important.

I always had the impression he underperformed in "big games" as time went on and that name started being used sarcastically but the overall resume is actually pretty impressive. If you define a big game as:
-BCS bowl game -B12 championship game -Texas -Top 15 opponent

Stoops knows how to hire great assistants. Leach and Heupel were his most notable OCs.
Plus, they churned out NFL talent like nobody's business when he was there.
5 BCS bowl wins, a national championship, and absolute domination of his conference say he's pretty fucking good.

-BCS bowl game
-B12 championship game
-Texas
-Top 15 opponent
then he won 65%:

That's a home run if there ever was one.
