My dad was the plant manager of a chemical plant in Portland that made lots of stuff, from rocket fuel, to potassium chlorate (white stuff on the tip of wood matches), chlorine and DDT. We always had a five gallon bucket of the stuff in the garage and a line of white DDT surrounding the foundation of our house, like a football end zone. The production building was like working in a flour mill. White DDT powder everywhere, most workers were smoking a couple of packs of non-filter cigarettes a day and eating their sandwiches at lunch in this hot mess. Fortunately, they got rid of DDT before I started working there in the summer.
The chlorine cells used an asbestos coated screen for filtration. The asbestos was laved on by the workers as a wet mush. Didn't have to work there. Same dudes were smoking as they worked with asbestos.
