My assessment if William's isn't too promising. I hope I'm wrong about him. He seems treat it up against bad offenses like ours, and get exposed against decent competition. He doesn't tackle well at all and is a few steps slow in space.bananasnblondes said:
I think he'll be better next year. I was, however, quite surprised by just how bad he played at times last year given the preseason hype.DoogWhisperer said:Just hope Cam grows some balls (or hair).

He will be good. He wasn’t noticeable in a bad way later in the year when he was playing again.chuck said:

Comeback player of the year Julius Irvin.

The lack of tackling is concerning. I am more optimistic about turner. Williams could still be good though. He is someone i would have liked to see redshirt. I am Interested to see if Irvin is any good too. I was Really high on him out of high school.RoadDawg55 said:

I feel like he'll either be comeback player of the year or in the portal by next December.DawgDaze71 said:Comeback player of the year Julius Irvin.
Really hoping for the former, one of my favorite DB recruits of the Lake era. -
It’s just an opinion dude.FireCohen said:

Seems like the assessment of a kid who played too early. If he plays with more decisiveness and confidence next year he gains the steps you think he lacks. No way he is slower of foot than Jojo. Jojo just knew what Jimmy wanted and was a very confident defender. As for tackling, that may be a problem unless he gains belief in his physicality after an off season of Socha and RC.chuck said:

You missed reading comprehension. I gave an assessment of what I've seen. Then I said "I hope I'm wrong about him". I didn't write him off, as you said. That's just fucking stupid, but I've considered the source.FireCohen said:

Yeah...maybe. I hope so. I'm not sure that being a freshman safety excuses being slow in pursuit and inept at open field tackling. We'll see.theknowledge said:

I know he has a nose for the ball. That's good. -
True freshman defensive back takes lumps, shocking doogs everywhere.
-
Not talking about his lumps. The question is whether he has the physical tools to improve. At least I think that's the question.dtd said:True freshman defensive back takes lumps, shocking doogs everywhere.

Am I writing for the times? Am I being paid for my scouting reports?dtd said:
Fuck man, this is a fan board. I form opinions about what i see, and i leave open the possibility that I'm wrong. I'd have a stronger opinion one way or the other if I had all 22 footage, but I'd have to be as big a drippy cunt as you to want that. -
He will get better. I’m not worried about it. He played QB his whole life and was simply a ball hawk on defense in high school.chuck said:

He’s not a great tackler yet but he will get better. He made assignment blunders that to me seem out of character. Guys were wide open on those TD’s. Busted coverages that he obviously fucked up because he got pulled for it. He’s a hard worker and I think he will clean up all of that with time. Those were youth issues. Like I said, he started playing a lot again later in the year and was not noticeable in a bad way at all.
He’s never been considered a freak athlete but he’s fluid and super athletic. The ball skills show it. He was also a good high school QB. It’s sizzle but he strikes me as a business type that is extremely driven. -
You just started two freshman, who are now experienced. As soon as ASA finishes the offseason of Rhino cum, and gets up to 210 he’s going to destroy some people in the Taylor Rap roll.AtomicDawg said:
One might also say with all those guys on the roster in 2019 they shouldn’t have had the worst pair of lb’s of any major conference. I don’t think they will be as bad as this year but they very well could be the weakest position group and below average again.bananasnblondes said:
Yeah. If we can pencil in Ulofoshio, we need to find ONE guy to stand next to him. We have a stable of four 4* guys in Ngata, Sirmon, Hemuli, and Calvert, plus theres Tafisi who played last year. Having a decent ILB duo next year shouldnt be that tall of an order.RoadDawg55 said:
Don’t know if he’s any good, but Stanford’s defense was terrible. I actually think we will be pretty good at LB next year. Ulofoshio cemented himself as a solid starter (maybe more) and we have a plethora of young LB’s that redshirted. Sirmon sucked for most the year, but he did get better too. Ngata is a wildcard and could possibly be a good player if he gets to play ILB.Bread said:Andrew Pryts (ILB) led stanford in tackles and is looking to grad transfer. Please tell me we have contacted him.
Safety is another area of concern next year too. There is talent there and a track record of developing it though so i think it will be ok but maybe not above average. Maybe Irvin can contribute there. -

People expected big things from tryon, Taylor and quite honestly Wellington this year.NeGgaPlEaSe said:

None were good at the start of the year. Tryon was pretty good by the end of the year and Taylor looked great in the bowl game. Both took time throughout the year to improve though. That can equal losses on the early part of the schedule especially since we play a team with a pulse in the opener. Wellington never improved.
Just saying they are still sophomores. They likely are not going to be anywhere close to the strength of the defense next year and will be exploited vs other positional groups with the ILB’s.

There is danger in believing it carries over. That’s not always the case.AtomicDawg said:

Quentin Richardson looked good tv e last few games of 2010 and sucked again the next year. Tryon looked really good at the end of 2018 and was pretty bad early in the year. Same for Taylor and Wellington tbh. -
Jimmy’s defensive backs have all progressed. We have yet to see people not improve, from Kevin King to ASA

Will be interesting to see how Lakes promotion affects the DB development

SMFJIV struggled as a true freshman. Remember when EWU put up 52 against us?
Cam Williams will improve significantly between his freshman and sophomore years -
I wouldn’t make those guys as anything but busts. Some guys will always busy regardless of coaching. The guys that play get better.dnc said:

Jones was up and down his freshman year. He didn’t play that much against EWU and the TD he gave up he was right there. He was burned badly against Arizona for a long TD and was terrible against UCLA as well.whatshouldicareabout said:SMFJIV struggled as a true freshman. Remember when EWU put up 52 against us?

Budda was horrible against Hawaii and Eastern. The Hawaii slot WR was killing Budda. Luckily the Hawaii QB missed him a few times. A ball bounced off Buddha’s face mask against Eastern. Buddha’s lack of hands always drove me nutty, even when he was great at everything else. They scored a TD the next play. -
Yeah I would actually say Cam had a more successful true freshman campaign than Sydney did. He took a ton of lumps. I cant remember how good Budda was as a freshman but I'm sure he had some roughmplays toowhatshouldicareabout said:SMFJIV struggled as a true freshman. Remember when EWU put up 52 against us?
