@sonics1993 how big of a liability are bob gregory and jordan paopao on the recruiting trail? I know pete will never make a change for gregory but it seems it like both of these coaches miss key guys year in and year out
Jordan is a solid recruiter and has helped out with few commitments no one gives him credit for like Daniel Heimuli, Troy Fautanu and Noa Ngalu. Bob on the other hand is just not a good recruiter but is a excellent coach who knows how to develop guys. And the staff around him can make up for his downfall with recruiting and he can coach them up. Remember we had Ale Kaho who is a 5 star LB and Henry To'o To'o but the parents got in the way.
To play devil's advocate- there are always good excuses for the fish that got away.
Way too many big fish slip off our hooks at LB even with multiple staff members pitching in. Last year it was To'oTo'o the year before Ale this year Botelho and Herbig. All for good reasons but closers give recruits reasons to choose UW and to ignore reasons to go elsewhere.
The staff around Bob has prevented it from being an unmitigated disaster by getting Heimuli among others but the talent at LB still lags the rest of the roster.
Also why hasn't Bob's coaching and development translated to special teams success? Does he just not have enough time to devote or does he not have the knowledge or what?
I expect our coverage teams will be better this year just due to increased depth but our kicking still seems like it could be a huge disaster. And why is Fuller returning punts? Is that CP's decision?
But we had Ale, he committed and signed. Nothing we can do when it gets shady. He had Henry, Henry's dad thought he should be a outside pass rusher/buck, nothing we can do about that. LB play has yet to be a problem so I don't see thee need to replace especially with his track record. There are a lot of of LB coaches that can recruit but can't coach and I don't wan them. The whole coaching staff is involved with special teams, blaming just Bob for it is wrong.
But at the level we are now recruiting at most of our recruits have an Alabama, Oregon, USC, and/or Ohio State coach willing to do or say anything to get that kid.
So by definition when we lose on a kid like To'oto'o or Ale or Botelho it will be for a perceived shady or unfair reason.
Bob has lots of those types of losses now.
I can't think of a single Jimmy Lake recruit who we've lost due to family or other outside circumstances. Byron Murphy for one had a lot of pressure to go elsewhere but Jimmy held on.
Malloe got burned twice on Marlon and Togiai. We thought he was going to be another subpar recruiter but either those really were both flukes or he made a huge adjustment because he has been lights out ever since.
I don't want an LB coach that can recruit but can't coach. I want one who can do both.
Everyone wants to work for CP at this point. Why not leverage that to hit another homerun assistant hire? Look at the hit rate of coaches added to the staff later vs the original staff.
Whatever the problem with special teams was last year I hope they adjusted their approach this year.
We are never going to do whatever it takes to get someone. Look at Ringo, we never had a chance because we don't play those type of games. If you look at Jimmy's recruiting he's getting four star's but beside Bryon and Trent they are 3 star or low four stars. What makes Jimmy special is how he develops them. And recruiting front seven players is a lot more intense than DB recruiting trust me.
Oh thank god, the Sonics dude is back! I was nervous when he was not posting for awhile. Thought maybe we scared him off already. Am I coming off as needy?
Does the recruiting board for coaches align somewhat with 247's composite, err 247 Sports (fuck you, ESPN), rankings at all? Do they or the recruiting assistants pay any attention to rankings or 4/5 stars, ie the blue-chip ratio?

Somewhat yeah and i'm sure they look at how players are ranked but it has no bearing on there evaluation just mores so out of curiosity.
