He's right Yellow. Watch the U part 1. There are different types of privilege beyond endowment. Miami is a mid-sized private school in Coral Cables .... a good run from the hood in any direction. At the time the fb really started to flex, it was also lilly white.
It was kind of a USC. A place kids went to who didn't get into better schools. USC only recently started raising crazy money, as we just discussed. They were very shiny and LOOKED rich, but never were, and on a relative basis, are not now.
I'd say Miami's actual status as a school and who goes there is not at all like image the football team projected for years. Mind you, a lot of that shit was also super exaggerated. Miami did, and still does, get called out for every little thing, and when they do, "Thug U" comes out of the wood work. It matters not one bit that the mid-90s Nebraska program was more ruthless and out of control than Miami ever was. Perception is king, and Miami's perception as a hood rat school is firmly entrenched.
Basically, this country is full of stupid people who need default images of everything to help them keep the world straight. -
One other thing: that bad ass image, at least as it related to the team, was very much earned on the field. Those teams in the 80s were tuff. Nothing better symbolizes who they were than the pre-game coin toss in the OB against #1 OU and the Boz:Doogles said:
