Matt Calkins: Why the Huskies need Lorenzo Romar

FALSE: B-Roy wasn't enrolled yet due to clearinghouse issues. Nate Rob was playing football still. And Conroy and Jones barely sniffed the NBA.DugtheDoog said:Thomas, when you say in year 3 Romar hit the jackpot, that's not exactly true. He hit the jackpot when he took the job. There were 3 NBA players on the roster, one being ROTY and all-star before he even signed on the dotted line. 4/5 starters in his "magical" year 3 were here because of Bender. As has been pointed out, it takes a whole lot more effort to turn around a team of 85 than a team of 12. Petersen inherited no pac12 level QBs, 1 returning starter on the OL and only 1 player in the secondary with significant game experience.
And Romar did not "win the conference" in year 3. Arizona did. Washington won the gimmick pac10 tournament after the regular season. So even when Petermen doesn't win the Pac12 this year, he won't have the opportunity to claim a 2nd chance championship.
They split the regular season series with Arizona, and then UW won the third game in the conference tourney final.
Petersen can't even claim the Northwest Championship.

Bob Bender was the UW coach until March 2002. Not sure when Romar was hired. Regardless, Nate was done with football prior to that. Oh, and he scored 13 points/game that year. B-Roy did have admittance issues, and I can't find specifics of commitment date, but he certainly made it into school for the season, as he scored 6 points/game that year.ThomasFremont said:

I'm not a Romar fan, but c'mon man. Conroy was a walk-on, Nate came to play football.. Bender doesn't deserve a single bit of credit for either guy. Bobby Jones and Tre Simmons were both Romar recruits. The only guy that came in a true stud was B Roy and even he took time to get to an elite level.DugtheDoog said:Thomas, when you say in year 3 Romar hit the jackpot, that's not exactly true. Petersen inherited a team that was at worst, average, even with shitty QB's. They had talent. Romar inherited a terrible team that was shit. -
B-Roy missed most of the freshman season (played in only 13 games) due to NCAA clearinghouse issues. Bender may have recruited him initially, but Romar had to actually wait for him to get into school. It's not like he inherited the senior season AA version of B-Roy.HuskyInAZ said:

And Nate never played for Bender. He joined the basketball team after the Sun Bowl. The team Romar inherited was so bad that a midget walk-on football player not only started, but led the team in scoring after missing half the season.
But tell us more about how great Bob Bender was... -
Shit thread without a pic of the bender twins
