It's hard to call a defense good when they've only stopped one team in conference, drunk Sark's Trojans. RIP.
Cal - 30 points, 28 first downs, 481 yards, 10-20 on 3rd USC - 12 points, 20 first downs, 346 yards, 1-13 on 3rd (crucial!) Oregon - 26 points, 21 first downs, 442 yards, 9-18 on 3rd Stanford - 30 points, 25 first downs, 478 yards, 6-14 on 3rd
So they usually give up 30 points, 450 yards and allow about 50% on 3rd down.
That isn't good. And people were actually calling them "great" after the Cal game. Boggles my mind. A good defense can win games in spite of an offense. An average defense will do enough to keep the scoreline respectable. This defense is average, with the potential to be good next year. They are not good yet.
You want to see a good defense, go watch my Crimson Tide. That is a good defense.
Before yesterday the defense was 12th in one of the metrics football outsiders uses and I think 14 or 16 in ESPN's FPI. That is now 22nd. Considering the weak offenses left on the schedule, the defense will finish in the top 15.
That's a good, borderline very good defense. If it had another good safety (instead of Clay, Turner, etc) it would be top 10 and a great defense.

I know your post was meant to convey that we're a shit team that can't stop anyone because they average 30 points against us and are 50% on 3rd downs but...
Cal is averaging 31.4 points against Power 5 teams, we held them to 30 USC is averaging 31.6 points against Power 5 teams, we held them to 12 Oregon is averaging 29.4 points against Power 5 teams, we held them to 26 Stanford is averaging 38.5 points against Power 5 teams, we held them to 31
And all this with the worst offense at UW since 2008.
We aren't a Top 10 defense in the country, but we're currently holding all of our opponents to less than their average scoring offense against Power 5 schools.
Most ignorant post ever laid down in this shitpit. Take a bow Houston, then stay there while Freemont puts a thorough buttfuckin to you . This is typical dawgman post-loss panic language, with zero understanding of the big picture. Pete has a good football team a brewin. Wait it out cunt, I said 3-5 years.
They are a pretty good to very good Pac 12 defense. I remember hearing Utah's defense was pretty good and a slightly buzzed SC team skullfucked them all over the field.
Perspective. Any offensive help at all and they would be damn good
The defense is good...BUT they've been strung out by the inept offense so may times it is obvious they have quit.
This defense with a slightly below average offense is a 1 loss team at worst this year.
How can you remotely believe that?
Oregon and Stanford both would have scored more points if needed. The defense is only looking good to idiots like yourself because the offense is so horrid, opposing teams let up in the second half.
Some of the responses in this thread are borderline embarrassing. You all need to check your privilege. I need to check which bored I am currently posting on. Do that many people really not know what a good defense looks like? Is it because no one in our conference plays defense? Is it because the offense is bad enough to overshadow defensive issues? Fuck... No wonder Nick Holt made it 3 years here. REAL Oregon would have hung 60 points and 300 rushing yards on us this year. Same with USC.

Maybe Stanford let up, that game was a plunger start to finish. But the other three games UW lost by one score. The opponent didn't let up.
It's a solid defense, especially by today's standards. If our offense was decent, the TOP wouldn't be so lopsided, and the defense would be better rested to make stops/plays.
Instead, the offense has maybe two good drives per game, usually thanks to a big run by Gaskin. The rest of the time they're punting and putting the defense right back out on the field. Even the Seahawks defense gets exposed and worn out when the offense fails over and over again like that.
This is a big reason why I am done with Pete. If the offense is not ready to pass and score consistently, the least he could do is run the fucking ball before they punt. It wears down the other team's D, it runs clock which shortens the game, it's a higher percentage play, it's easier to teach our "too young" linemen to block, and it happens to be the best option anyways since the true frosh RB is the best player on that side of the ball. Pete's failure to identify and effectively deploy a winning game strategy is maddening. He seems like he is just forcing his shit system, and doesn't give a fuck if we? lose doing it. Games are not the time to force some shit that didn't work in practice, ya dumb fuckin donkey.

If the offense was good, the defense would still suck on 3rd down and struggle to make basic tackles. HTH.
Probably true. I just think the pieces are there to have a one loss team that is rebuilding on schedule instead of a 3-4 dreckfest that needs to DIAFF.

This is what kills me, literally a below average offense has UW ahead of schedule. Not asking for a miracle, just be somewhere close to average on offense and look competent sometimes and I'd still want smith fired but we'd have hope and shit.

Fuck.
If they looked decent most of the time, but were just making some mistakes here or there that cost us games, I might give an ounce of credence to the "youth" excuse.
But the playcalling, the execution, the tempo, the awareness, everything is all SHIT. From a HC that specializes in offense. Unacceptable.
Youth isn't an excuse for the offense to look as inept as it does. The plays look fucking horrible and disorganized. If we had a clunker here and there, alright fine, we are young, but it's every fucking game against Pac 12 teams.
@ThomasFremont had the best post of the thread. Pete coaches like 2017 will be special. He does what the fuck he wants and if his offenses hadn't sucked for four years, I might even think he was treating these games like practices. But based on his recent history, I think it's much more likely that he's just a fucking loser who has no clue on how to run an offense without a Kellen Moore.
Our D is fucking good. You stay on the field 70 percent of a game because your inept offense and stupid fucking coaches can't execute their way out of a fucking wet bag.
You could also argue that they couldn't get off the field.
Your* a fucking moron.
The defense is not the problem.
You're* lack of understanding of the game is, for you.
