USC/UCLA Wants to Shut the Door

I've actually been in a handful of situations back your way in which I said "USC" and created confusion. It tends to not happen when you say "SC", with the "U"; but if you're in the southeastern US, "USC" doesn't mean only So Cal. Lolz. South Carolina sucks.whlinder said:
I can see how USC desperately wanted this for their brand. Theirs has eroded, especially compared to their rival Notre Dame, largely due to USC's own ineptitude since Carroll, but the lack of Pac-12 exposure doesn't help.creepycoug said:The latest scuttle has it that SC and UCLA were on bended knee begging for the transfer. SMFH. Embarrassing. But then, now too are Oregon and Washington. Anyway, it seems as though which teams go where will vary depending on the situation. Some will be attractive based solely on where they are and local markets (UCLA), and some will be their own market (Notre Dame). There will be combinations, which implies that preserving well watched rivalries (like, arguably, UW/OR, which to me is hands down the best rivalry in the Pac) might be a factor.
Hard to say how much SC's brand, on its own, was the driver. I'm sure it factored in. But the big driver is getting Big 10 schools multiple trips to LA and grabbing that market by the balls.
I hate all this, but it's also intriguing as fuck. You can play this game of "what about ...?" all around the country. I'm still intrigued by a partnership between the two coast conferences, but only as long as they can stay in tact. What's left of the Pac and the current ACC lineup, particularly if Clemson holds form and at least two of Miami/FSU/Va. Tech can return to form, and Washington gets its shit together again and this new guy at Oregon proves good ... with all of that you'd really have something.
This is anecdotal, but in the DMV, USC is the University of South Carolina most of the time now. The Troojans of Southern California are rarely on TV and not really discussed except by the most serious of CFB fans.
Not cool story bro, no pics, fuck off: My daughter's friend is a verbal commit for soccer to Northwestern. When the news of USC/UCLA to the B1G broke, this girl was like "Oh shit, we have to play UCLA now, they're good, damn, that's gonna be rough, and we gotta travel out there. And South Carolina, that's kind of random to add them"
I mean, I realize teen girls aren't usually the primary target of CFB broadcasters, but that's the next generation of fans. USC associating itself to the B1G gets them at least back in discussion to a lot of the country. -
South Carolina should be referred to as the Cocks because any chance to say Cocks without repercussion should be taken.creepycoug said:

Sports is the problem that’s hard to solve. Geographic rights are now based on GPS coordinates, not server locations, so using a proxy doesn’t work. So, I pay for internet and try and catch what I can on Amazon, Apple, YouTube TV. If you’re still in the Seattle area you could try the TMobile 5G internet hub and get yourself an over the air HD digital antenna. With that you should be able to cancel Comcast.creepycoug said:

SEC told Tamu to fuck off. Not sure that happens here though.
Overall, they lead the series heads up.
UCLA has one NC, Washington has two.
Head to head is less important since the schools often missed each other in given years (I'd be more interested in the stat if they always played every year) but given the fact that UCLA sits in the middle of a recruiting hot bed you'd sorta expect them to lead the series even if all of the randomness of missed games is removed. UCLA is one of those schools that just does less with more.

Tru is frantically searching for the quote button so that he can remind you that UW went 4-8 last year while UCLA went 8-4.HairyBallsDawg said:

If you're going on research productivity, Washington doesn't really take a back seat to too many universities, and without looking I'll risk it and say it blows Notre Dame away and might even be a click better than UCLA. Or it might not. If you go by undergraduate selectivity, which is often the conversation, then Stanford is considerably >> than all the schools mentioned, including ND. The problem with that approach is Arizona State and Arizona blow Georgetown out of the water on that measure; but the level of students at Georgetown is several flights up from what you typically encounter in Tempe or Tuscon.WoolleyDoog said:

Washington has become a lot tougher to get into in the last 10 or so years. Even still, the difference in UG selectivity difference between UW and Oregon is no doubt smaller than the difference between UW and Stanford. Probably UCLA too. ND has gotten to be pretty tough too and is no doubt harder to get into than UW.
Stanford
UCLA
Notre Dame
Washington
Oregon
Said another way, it would make a shitty SAT question.

I'll add this: I honestly, objectively, think UW is a better fit in the Big 10 than Oregon. Not so much just for the academics; the B10 has more than its share of academic middle weights. I probably have a bias because I grew up watching UW playing Michigan and Iowa in Rose Bowls, not Oregon. I have no scientific basis for the view. More of a feel and an optic kind of thing. The Big 10 is old and stodgy and probably were the first people to use the term "blue blood" to describe their programs. UW, too, takes itself VERY seriously and has a very high opinion of itself. It's in the culture. How else does an idiot like Lake (who went to fucking Eastern) pop off? I went to school there for UG and LS and grew up around Huskies. We?'re used to looking down on programs not named USC. Historically it's been a bit of a snotty school. When we're? not good at football, we switch to academis shit talk. I think part of that is because Cuog! is the ultimate little brother all around and they begrudgingly defer to us? (because they don't have much choice). IDK. UW just feels like it fits in with the old Midwestern powers like Michigan, who also likes itself quite a lot. Stanford is the school that won't ever say "we have really high level academics" because they know everybody knows it. They get to just sit there and smirk. UW is like Michigan in that they know not everyone knows where they stand academically, so they tell you. "Dude, people turn down Ivies to go to Ross!" I've literally heard that said. You would never hear a Stanford person say something like that. It's a given.
Oregon likes itself a lot too, but it's a different feel. They have a chip on their shoulder and they know they are new money. Part of what I like about their program is they said "fuck off" to the entrenchment crowd and said "we can fucking do it too" and went out and did it while UW people were snickering at them. That kind of story, which is not a bad story, fits better somewhere else. Like the Big 12. Somewhere with a "let's talk about today" crowd. That's not the Big 10.

What is not intriguing about making the best of the Pac 12, Big 12 and (the entire) ACC a super conference?YellowSnow said:

You could get by with one football trip to the east coast and have one ACC team visit you every year. You still play the bulk of your conference games out west (within your division or sub division).
And the non revenue sports never have to travel to the east coast. Rarely past mid America.
If you don't make a move to "pick up" Clemson, FSU, Miami, Virginia, VT and NC now (along with six of the best B12 teams) it just doesn't end well. Particularly if we don't get an invite to the B1G.
I loathe sitting around and hoping some one else will secure my future. But if you feel comfortable doing that, well, power to you, I guess. -
Of course they don’t. No one else in the B10 does either. Even if they wouldn’t get full share. It’s just 2 more mouths to feed with teams that their core base could gaf about.creepycoug said:behind them. At least it’s been suggested they don’t want UW/UO to follow. That’s likely because they don’t want to recruit against them anymore. If UW/UO get left behind, then they will have a lesser platform on which to recruit in Cali and SC/UCLA can clean up in the West.
Sounds like this very thing is happening with the Gators not wanting Miami in the SEC.
