As far as a culture change goes I want players to think they have to come in and compete, not just given the red carpet treatment coming out of high school because of their recruiting ranking. It’s 2021 and I get that the QB position is different especially with the portal and if Sam had played this year and looked pretty good I could see your argument a bit better. But he wasn’t able to beat out Morris who likes to regularly throw into triple coverage and looked TERRIBLE in his first start. Yes the team gave up and played a part but he didn’t do anything well that game, at all. He shouldn’t automatically be handed the starting job if competition is brought in.sonics1993 said:

I hope Sam would stay but he's bottom line not a game-changing talent at this level. If he could run a 4.4 that would be different.
He can get much better and would be great in DeBoer's offense eventually. Righ now he needs to learn a ton and humble himself.

That said there are plenty of opportunities to leverage the portal to fill any holes in recruiting … today’s world means that you should be able to upgrade your ILB room to avoid having to play Kyler Manu as a starter in 2019 -

And then his crime is that he allegedly didn’t beat out Eason … who by many accounts the competition was very close and it can be argued Eason was chosen as much for gut feeling and upside than anything

Maybe but there are people that have transferred out like McKinney who sucked here but started most of the year for the likely conference champ and contributed. I thought he sucked too but Utah found a way to make him productive. We have been so shitty with our schemes and coaching and personnel decisions nobody knows what to expect next year.sonics1993 said:

I think you can accept two things at the same time. Huard has not shown to be good and he also can be good under the new coaches.
Haener was literally here throwing picks 3 years ago then he went to the staff that we have now and he got better. I hope Haener comes back too but to rule out Sam or, to a much lesser extent, Dylan would be ignoring the root cause of the overall poor QB play, Donovan. -
