I still think promoting Mark Helfrich in 2013 instead of hiring Pete (he wanted the job) was one of the biggest blunders in Oregon history. I'd be happy to take Pete off your hands.
Pete can coach. Let's not forget the Boise St fiesta bowl against Oklahoma, arguably one of the greatest college football games of all time. -
Hawaii is going to score, probably a lot.BeerThirty said:this Hawaii game will be VERY important for the DBs. They need to really turn it around. We'll see

Bullshit. If Petersen wanted that job, he would've gotten the job. End of story.greenblood said:I still think promoting Mark Helfrich in 2013 instead of hiring Pete (he wanted the job) was one of the biggest blunders in Oregon history. I'd be happy to take Pete off your hands.

Also, he's not the same coach now as he was in that Fiesta Bowl. Not sure what happened to him, but he's gone dumbshit in close games, as well as bowl games. -
Exactly why Petersen should get his mitts off the offense. I have been a huge Petersen honk all the way up to now but he has reached "show me" status. In addition his teams are generally horrible to watch. This is year six. For the first time I'm wondering if he hasn't hit his ceiling. I'm just not seeing him make the hard choices that champion level coaches do.BeerThirty said:
not giving him a pass, but he is doing what Pete isn't. He is putting the talent on the field. They made mistakes but they are young and they'll get it. If they don't, he has shown that he will put others out there. Pete doesn't do thatGreenRiverGatorz said:
Why the fuck is Lake getting a pass here? His secondary was shit on Saturday and the defense was an abomination considering how bad Cal's offense is. Cam Williams has so far been the worst starter we've seen in the secondary since 2015.BeerThirty said:maybe it is time for Pete to go back to the Mountain West. He seems to be stuck in that mindset. Give Lake a shot at HC. At least he has shown that he'll play the young guys. Mistakes happen but the talent is there.

At Boise he could play gunslinger in big games because he was out-talented and had nothing to lose. At UW his talent in big games is much more comparable to the opposition so it comes down to coaching. Pete played to win at Boise.digits said:

Even your own paper disagrees.
Oregon was so drunk on the "Chip Kelly magic", they thought anything he did or said was right. They blindly took his advice when he said that Helfrich was the man for the job, even though Chip took away play calling duties from him after only one game. -
We don’t create turnovers anymore. Idk why but it’s bullshit. You can’t be an elite defense without creating turnovers.
-
I think this is the biggest problem that UW faces as a team, overall. The offense and defense are bound to have stupid games once in a while. You can mitigate that damage by forcing a couple turnovers and giving the offense a short field.GOAT said:We don’t create turnovers anymore. Idk why but it’s bullshit. Look at how the Seahawks won yesterday for a perfect example of that. -
Sorry Race but disagree.RaceBannon said:Lake gets a pass because of recruiting
The defense has suffered since he took over play calling
In his first season as a playcaller, Lake had a better total defense and scoring defense than Kwat's previous 3 years. Can't say the defense has suffered when it's actually improved. The only knock was the lack of pressure and sacks, which now he's dialed up but to the detriment of big plays.
Kwat has a major hand in the defense and game planning. They'll sit down and figure it out. The blitzing and pressure has led to more sacks but also blown assignments and big plays for the other team. They'll adjust and find a balance. LIPO.
The offense on the other hand.... FYFMFE -
Not necessarily.digits said:

Butch Davis wanted the Miami job and didn't get the Miami job.
ADs gonna AD when they wanna AD.
I had heard, too, that Oregon was on the short list of jobs he'd leave Boise for. -

At this point David Shaw has a more successful big game record than Pete. Let that settle in.

Shaw, Harbaugh, Petersen, Riley, etc. all Tier 2 coaches. Good but not great. Why should we think we deserve anything better? We are a Tier 2 fanbase. Hard to swallow but the truth often is.UW_Doog_Bot said:At this point David Shaw has a more successful big game record than Pete. Let that settle in.

And we're still the best fanbase on the Left Coast which shows you how lame people out here about college football.whuggy said:

The fan base has been dwindling into the abyss. It's sad how far it's fallen.
At least I can look back to the rockin stadium of the 90's. The passion was real. I also remember the Marquise Cooper (RIP) pick in the Apple Cup . The stadium exploded. Pure pandemonium.
If Pete looks at Don James every morning when he enters the office maybe he should go back and look at the tape when Don decided he had to make a change. A change that translated into unparalleled glory. -
you don't change the process. The process changes you.

Are you telling me Pete hasn't been allowed to recruit a 5 star big armed QB?YellowSnow said:UW_Doog_Bot said:At this point David Shaw has a more successful big game record than Pete. Let that settle in.
The first time he blew it with Skinny. The second time he's proving why Skinny was right to leave.
Harb's record at Michigan has shown that Shaw's success isn't simply an inheritance. He's part of the formula. -
The fanbase in the 90's was also in part a product of winning and UW being WARSHINGTON DAMN IT. There was real pride to be taken in our TUFF lunch pail teams.jecornel said:The fan base has been dwindling into the abyss. It's sad how far it's fallen.

There's some chinevitable decline because of the broader culture but not much deterministically more than the rest of college football.
Jen's at least trying, I'll give her that, but there's still more that needs fixed for the fan base to return to an approximation of its zenith. -

Promoting Helfrich was the right move at the time. He plungered the defending champs in spectacular fashion and earned the ducks a second natty appearance in 4 years. Any coach that can get you to the championship game to gain a shot at the title is worth hiring. He just didn't have what it took to go the extra mile. For that, and for various other reasons that were obvious by that time, he should have been fired on the tarmac after the title game. -
Shaw's a good coach. Top 10 in the county IMO. But...UW_Doog_Bot said:

He didn't land Luck; he came to Stanford when Harbaugh was the coach.
His biggest achievement was beating Oregon in 2012 and 13. And they beat Wisco in the Rose. There's no wins over the like of Alabama, Auburn, Penn St, etc. -
Let's hypothetically say Pete takes over the Alabama program tomorrow. Does he match Saban's success over the next six years?
-
A ham sandwich and a bag of cheetos could have coached that Mariota lead team to the Championship game. Florida State was an extremely flawed team, and the only quality team top to bottom Oregon played that year was Ohio State in the title game, and they got smoked with a +4 turnover margin. +4 turnover margin, and lost that game by 22.oregonblitzkrieg said:greenblood said:I still think promoting Mark Helfrich in 2013 instead of hiring Pete (he wanted the job) was one of the biggest blunders in Oregon history. Just a reminder that Saban said he didn't think he could win big at USC
Because of who we? are out here
