A strongly worded rebuke:

"If Russia continues on its current course, we have a range of tools at our disposal, including sanctions that would target certain sectors of the Russian economy, and we have been consulting closely with our European and G7 partners"

But then not so much:

But, noting that energy resources flowed from Russia to the continent even throughout the Cold War, he said that the notion of "turning off the tap" of natural gas and oil would be "unrealistic."

I bet Putin is worried as hell now.

    Well, if what you say is a option he should have said stop your shit or NATO is going to get medieval on your ass. But that's not going to happen. So he will continue with strong rebukes and not doing anything meaningful economically...such as turning off the gas as you suggested was an option...now, not so much.

    Because Ukraine fucked themselves and didn't join NATO. They had a chance to, and decided to make closer ties to Russia.

    I'm hoping that there is a lot of behind the scenes talking and action being taken. It isn't surprising that the President isn't talking tough given that Ukraine is not under the NATO Article 5 umbrella.

    Ideally we should be working on basing arrangements for a substantial troop presence in Poland, Romania and the Baltics, initiating talks to bring Sweden and Finland formally into NATO, and a contingency plan to help the Euros wean themselves off Russian gas+oil, starting this winter.

    Just because the US won't instill a draft and send in tons of foot soldiers, doesn't mean we won't send our AF and Navy to assist Europe and throw back Russia. The marines and special forces will get deployed as well.

    The citizens opinions don't fucking matter on this issue Damone. HTH

    You're backing off quite a bit. You went from we would go to war and invade to now "assist".

    The citizens don't matter? The war we are in and the fact Obama is the President suggests otherwise. If we went to war over this, it's political suicide for who ever is in charge. Simple fact.

    That was in response to a post dealing with the potential scenario of Russia nuking Europe.
