Indeed the detritus that is UW football goes far beyond incompetent coaching and poor HC hiring.
-
You can’t sell as many ads with a rocking atmosphere. Or as much beer.
The alcohol sales in Husky Stadium plus the no re-entry rule was a mega mistake. -
If UW football were a house, market comparables would be San Jose State, Georgia Tech and Rice.
-
Build it and they will come.
Personally I think the weak ass defense that we played had something to do with the lack of passion in the stadium. Bend but do t break, keep everything in front of you, don’t penetrate on the DL, rarely blitz, force long drives, fuck all that. I want a defense teams are afraid of and that will energize a crowd. -
Even when I was a kid and we were shitty, the stadium was always rocking, no matter the opponent.
One big mistake the school made was giving rich donors the student section seats at midfield. The atmosphere goes to shit when you give old, rich people the most impactful seats. Kids don't want to watch games from behind an end zone. Dumb as shit.
Look what happened to the Seahawks. They became good... old, rich people bought all the good seats as soon they were marked up, atmosphere lost. They're the type of morons that ask you to sit down and be quiet so they can enjoy their wine. -
Using the real estate analogy, Washington’s location and physical structure are fine. The problem is the crazy owner who does shitty yard care, decor, and home maintenance.TheHB said:If UW football were a house, market comparables would be San Jose State, Georgia Tech and Rice.

I agree, so sick of that D and dropping 3. Mix it up and make the opposing QB / OC think more, at least in a rivalry game. What I disliked most about this 2021 team is that they played not to lose.Alpo said:Build it and they will come.

Even when Petersen had it humming we couldn’t sell out the stadium. We had maybe 2 good atmospheres during his tenure (Stanford and Oregon). The 1990s are long long gone.
Willingham killed the culture. And the Seattle area has completely changed since then. Our ability to look like other fan bases is done. Time to make the stadium smaller and pump in the siren noise every down. -
Evolution of Seattle a huge factor. Not exactly surprising that computer engineers from India and around the world working for Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks etc. are not rabid, loud Husky fans.
30-40 years ago the Husky crowd was a whole lot different... the city was a whole lot different.
Also, Seahawks getting really good last decade or so pulled the remaining super loud blue collar types from Husky Stadium. -

Other than the shitty traffic, I disagree. If I-5 traffic was like it was 20 years ago and if we still played most of our games at 12:30 pm, the evolution of Seattle would be a benefit, not hindrance for games at Husky Stadium.
For me I-5 traffic and late kickoff times are my least favorite things on game days these recent years.
-
all good, but the demographics of Seattle have changed significantly over the past few decades. I'm not saying it's the only factor, but it's for sure a factor.Purple_Pills said:gmo said:Evolution of Seattle a huge factor.

I tend to agree, but most schools don’t have the students on the 50.BroadcastingDawg said:Even when I was a kid and we were shitty, the stadium was always rocking, no matter the opponent.

1991 UO/UW loudest game I’ve ever attended. Crowd roar when Brunell scored on a short TD run was deafening.
-
Just wait until upper campus kills off E1 tailgating with their master plan of building an “east campus”.
-
Seattle is a different town than it was 20+ years ago. It used to be TUFF blue collar liberals who would RIP your face off. They loved the Huskies. These were the fans Cougar fans hated so much because they didn’t attend UW (hi Harv!). Now it’s a city full of tech wealthy progressives, homeless, ANTIFA tards, and generally people who don’t give a fuck about Husky football.Purple_Pills said:gmo said:Evolution of Seattle a huge factor.

I don't know, UW crushing Stanford at home in 2016 was as loud as I had heard it in years.
With the Seahawks looking at a rebuild, the Huskies have a great chance to be King of Football with a coach who can win. -
I included that one Stanford game. One game doesn’t make a program or atmosphere.HFNY said:I don't know, UW crushing Stanford at home in 2016 was as loud as I had heard it in years.

There are many factors that go into low attendances.
#1 is a shitty product on the field. - if you have a city that has some actual culture and social scene then your product needs to be even better to make sure it's worth the time and effort.
All the other shit doesn't matter , location, tailgating any Covid guidelines. -

Even in the Petersen 10 win seasons and pac 12 championships it wasn’t what it should have been.TrojanSword said:There are many factors that go into low attendances.

The other shit absolutely maters. The COVID shit kept a lot of people away. Not covid itself be the mandate. And not just unvaxed people. There are plenty of vaxed people who say fuck you when it comes to proving it.
The game is shitty. It’s drifted to a pro sports atmosphere. It sucks. Let’s kill any crowd momentum with some dumb ass marketing shit.

The people you talk about still exist. If I-5 traffic didn’t suck so bad, we would get more fans in from Tumwater, Yelm, Centralia, Sedro-Woolley, etc.MikeDamone said:

I can vouch for Sedro-Woolley. Though it's getting harder for us to justify driving there and back to sit in the rain and watch shitty football for 6-7 Saturdays in the Fall.Purple_Pills said:

Splitting of the fanbases in states like Washington might no longer be sustainable. A percentage of the college football fans in western Washington are Coug fans. Ideally now a state like Oregon or Washington would be like Wisconsin, Missouri or LSU where there's really only one program to cheer for.
The shitting of the bed of the Pac-12 hasn't helped either. At least back in the day you could watch the Huskies get plundered by guys like Maurice Jones-Drew and Reggie Bush instead of now week after week watching QBs who can barely throw a forward pass control the game, guys like Travis Dye run for like 10 yards a carry, and a prevent defense give up play after play after play. Fuck that. -
After I left I thought I’d miss going to games. Turns out I didn’t miss the crappy experience.MikeDamone said:

The football team has sucked ass. Blame demographics all you want but that’s what it all boils down to.
