On the left, I think it historically tends to be more focused on labor = Cezar Chavez and that whole movement come to mind - than with ideas about political economy. And if we're going to be even handed about this, people of Mexican ancestry have always been in the SW U.S. just like @Swaye 's people. So there's that indelicate fact with which to contend.
