Cuba was the shit before Castro kicked out the mob.creepycoug said:what Bernie fails to tell you is that Cuba was a leader in Latin American healthcare and literacy BEFORE Castro. I've had old people who grew up in other parts of Latin America tell me that school text books almost always were written and published in Cuba. People went there for procedures.
Sure, there were significant percentages of the island's population that were not formally educated, and many who couldn't read or write. But we're talking about a long time ago. There were a lot of people in the rural and poor US, and Europe for that matter, who weren't exactly quoting passages from Shakespeare with facile grace. When Castro came to power, going to college was still something generally for upper class U.S. society. That was here. The world was a different place.
Castro may have spread some literacy to the campecinos that wasn't there before. BFD. At what cost? FTG.
This is basic Godfather Part II civics.
I bet her mom was ridiculously hot, too, in Habana in the 50's.
