Pistols are reactionary weapons. They are carried because it can be with you and keeps your hands free. Long guns such as rifles and shotguns are for fighting. That's why the military only issues certain members pistols. And then the pistol is something to fight the unexpected with temporarily until you can get to a long gun.dhdawg said:

If you know your going to a fight you bring a long gun. Police are often called to known circumstances and rifles are very appropriate. Shotguns too. It's like golf different clubs for differing circumstances. At my department we carried both in a dual rack in the car. -
