Nothing to see here. Everything is fine. It’s like a summer camp.

Yep it's terrible and they should be ashamed.
Concentration camp label is a distraction from these real issues. -
You’re the one distracting from the fact that we have textbook definition concentration camps.dnc said:Yep it's terrible and they should be ashamed.

I understand that what they are doesn’t match in your head with the words concentration camp but you are wrong. Literally, by definition, you are wrong.
Having shitty conditions for detainees is horrible. Accepting that we have concentration camps in America because we’re not gassing people is dangerous.
Do one thing for me, really try and be honest with yourself about this, if AOC said “yes, that’s the definition but it’s not what I feel when I hear the words so it’s wrong” what would your reaction be? -
If someone tried to apply a textbook definition to something she was saying when she was using what the whole country understands the phrase to mean I'd defend her. I've defended her more than once. I don't hate her like some do.allpurpleallgold said:

But it’s not the whole country. I’ll accept that you would defend that but, dude, it’s not the whole country. And the only way you make it “everyone” is by dismissing those, like me, that disagree.

But you only disagree because of what you've been taught in the last 48 hours, yes? Had this not been brought up did you honestly think differently?allpurpleallgold said:But it’s not the whole country. I’ll accept that you would defend that but, dude, it’s not the whole country. In high school I had a Japanese teacher that was in an internment camp. I remember him talking about it (worth noting, I mocked him after the class because I was a shitty Mercer Island kid). If you had asked me last weekend if Japanese internment camps were concentration camps, I would have said “basically, yeah”. If you had asked me about the border, I think I would have asked for the definition of concentration camps.dnc said:

I will say, I viewed it like a prison. You can be treated well in prison, treated poorly in prison, treated horribly in prison and executed in prison. In all of those scenarios you’re always in prison. What’s being argued now is a clear distinction between concentration camps and death camps so yes the argument would include something I learned in the last 48 hours. I think it works either way though.
I can’t make you believe me on what I hypothetically would have said but this is an article from 2012. This isn’t an overnight rash decision because we are so desperate to attack Trump.

That even has your argument in it, that saying concentration camps evokes images of Nazi atrocities. It’s been an argument, it didn’t become one when AOC said it. It’s not the whole country that agrees with you. -
I'm for it
