You have a region of the country that's more Conservative, more religious and more patriotic and supportive of the military and more pro-2nd Amendment on average than the rest of the country. The Rats have been running in the opposite direction from all of these issues since 1968. All through-out the 1970 and 1980s and into the 90s, the Rat party was openly hostile to all of these issues. But to the simply minded leftist it has to be white racism that explains the shift in party allegiances.
