ID requirements have no effect on fraud either – actual or perceived.

So voter ID laws don't discriminate, nor do they stop voter fraud.

Why are we even having this discussion?

Because some politicians make a big deal about voter fraud, even though everything I've read/heard is that voter fraud is basically non-existent.

What we should really be spending time on is how to increase voter turnout. It's piss poor in the US. People are disenfranchised from the system. Sad!

I think we should make it as hard as possible to vote to eliminate the stupid and lazy. if they made it tougher I would not waste my vote on 3rd or 4th party votes

The paper does note that one possible explanation for this effect is, paradoxically, that voter ID laws might goose turnout among certain marginalized groups. This, the authors argue, is because a perceived "attack" on a right (e.g., the right to vote) can mobilize voters who would otherwise fail to turn out.
