It's not a diversion. It is clearly dumb to not include SS and Medicare when talking about federal income taxes. When you do, it changes the calculation considerably. But it news source doesn't report that because you buy into the "Rich have suffered enough" narrative.

Social security and Medicare are straight income taxes and even reported on form 1040, you even get SS back on your 1040 if you worked two jobs and went over the threshold (ask me how I know). Yes, your news source doesn't include them because including them doesn't fit that narrative.

Since SS caps your benefits and Medicare offers the same care across the board, should people that pay more be entitled to higher SS benefits and better Medicare coverage?

Well people who pay more into SS do get more benefits. The amount you receive is directly related to the amount you paid in.

For flat tax, that's my point. That Bob is missing because he's not looking at the big picture and purely looking at "income tax". People scream about "top 1% pay 40% of all taxes". Well they also make 20% of the income. And pay only 4% of SS and Medicare. I can't find what that averages to, but when all are combined, they don't pay an amount of taxes that's out of whack for the income they earn. Same with lower incomes, when you factor in SS and Medicare, their tax liability based on income isn't out of whack for the amount of income they earn.
